GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER (Malone vs. Lake Erie)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon took the first sizeable lead with a mini 6-0 run that snapped an 8-8 tie. Senior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) sandwiched a jumper by sophomore Evan Phoenix (Stevensville, Md./Calvert Hall) with a pair of field goals for a 14-8 lead 7:53 into the contest.
  • Ohio Dominican slowly chipped away at the difference and eventually took an 18-16 lead on Michael Simon's three-pointer with 7:17 left in the first half.
  • Gannon immediately answered and regained a five-point lead (26-21) after junior Zay Jackson (Queens, N.Y./Westside) drained three free throws after being fouled while shooting from behind the arc.
  • Ohio Dominican was able score the final five points of the half on two Shemar Waugh free throws and another Simon triple to forge a 26-26 tie at the break.
  • The second half featured ties at 31 and 33, before Ohio Dominican started to pull away.
  • Trailing 33-31, the Panthers grabbed the lead for good with 10 consecutive points. Back-to-back three-pointers from Adam Cytlak capped the run, giving the visitors a 41-33 lead with 12:05 remaining.
  • Gannon had one last push left in it, using a 9-3 run to pull within 46-45 at the 6:50 mark. The run was capped by a jumper at the shot-clock buzzer by senior Marcus Jones (Brantford, Ontario/Athlete Institute) and lay-up by junior Damon Miraud (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) off a great assist from Jones.
  • However, Cytlak hit another big three-pointer 16 seconds later to stun Gannon's momentum.
  • The Golden Knights were never able to get closer than four points the rest of the way.
  • Ohio Dominican went 6-for-6 from the free throw line during the final 45 seconds to secure its biggest lead of the evening and account for the final score of 66-56.
