Mitchell Posts Team-High 15 Points; Lady Knights Fall to No.3 Ashland, 97-44

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: #3 Ashland 97, Gannon 44

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Lady Knights fell short in a non-conference battle against the third-ranked Ashland Eagles on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) paced the Lady Knights with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists but Ashland came away victorious, 97-44.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon scored the first two points of the game on a pair of Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) free throws at the 8:46 mark. The 2-0 lead for Gannon marked the first time Ashland trailed in a game this season.
  • Ashland went on a 13-0 run over the next four minutes and reclaimed a 13-2 advantage.
  • Mitchell broke the streak with a drive to the basket and Gannon went on its own 7-4 run to pull within eight at 17-9.
  • The Eagles made another run at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead out to 28-9 after the first quarter.
  • Ashland kept pressure on the Lady Knights in the second quarter. AU outscored Gannon 14-8 through the five minutes of the quarter and led, 42-17.
  • The Lady Knights went to the locker room trailing by 29, 49-20.
  • GU attempted to gain some traction in the second half as Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) scored the opening deuce of the third quarter but Ashland responded quickly at the other end with a 3-pointer by Kelsey Peare.
  • The Eagles outscored the Lady Knights 25-13 in the third quarter and led, 74-33.
  • In the final period, Mitchell connected on a jumper and three free throws. Mitchell made five-of-six free throws in the game and kept her top spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) in free throws made with 24.
  • Ashland closed out the game with a 97-44 victory.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Mitchell scored a team-high 15 points, five rebounds and four assists against her old squad. Mitchell transferred from Ashland after the 2015-16 season.
  • With the 15 points, Mitchell extended her streak of double-digit scoring to six games.
  • Kelsey Herbert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) produced her second 10+ rebound performance of the season. She tallied six points and 10 rebounds.
  • Freshman Julia Braungart (Southampton, N.J./Camden Catholic) recorded a season-high seven points, connecting on a 3-pointer and going four-of-four from the free-throw line.
  • The Lady Knights forced a season-high 15 turnovers out of Ashland. The Eagles came into the contest only averaging 9.3 turnovers. 
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Eagles won their fourth-straight game over the Lady Knights but GU still holds the all-time series by a 21-17 margin.
  • Gannon lost the rebounding edge for the first time in 2016-17. The Lady Knights were outrebounded, 46-33.
     
UP NEXT
  • The Lady Knights face their second Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division opponent of the week as they head to Findlay on Sunday, Nov. 27.
  • The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • Findlay stands at 3-2, with all of its games coming in non-conference play.
