Mitchell Drops Career-High 30 Points; Lady Knights Fall to Shepherd, 66-53 (Video)



THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Shepherd 66, Gannon 53

  • The Short Story: Junior Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) recorded a career-high 30 points but Gannon dropped its 2016-17 home opener against the Shepherd Rams on Wednesday (Nov. 16) night in the Hammermill Center.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) produced the first home points of the season with a lay-up at the 8:35 mark of the first quarter.
  • The Rams had a 12-6 run midway through the first quarter that propelled them to a 19-13 advantage at the break.
  • Shepherd scored the first two points of the second period but an ensuing Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) jumper spurred a 8-0 Gannon run to pull even at 21.
  • Gannon and Shepherd went to the locker room tied at 28.
  • The Lady Knights grabbed their first lead of the game in the third quarter when Mitchell stroked a three-pointer with 3:54 remainging to put Gannon up 39-38.
  • Nicole LaCava (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) extended to lead to 40-38 at the 3:20 mark of the third quarter. It was the largest lead the Lady Knights would get in the game.
  • Shepherd took the lead back for good with two free throws and a jumper from Cara Mason with 1:42 remaining to go up 42-40.
  • The Rams outscored the Lady Knights 20-10 in the fourth quarter and pushed the final score to 66-53.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Mitchell scored a career-high 30 points for the Lady Knights.
  • Mitchell's 30 points were the most since Morgan Neighbors (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) tallied 31 against Indiana (Pa.) on Dec. 1, 2015.
  • Freshmen, Chelsea Rourke (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Haley Tewes (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Kettering) each chipped in four points apiece for the Lady Knights. Both efforts were season-highs for the pair.
  • Redshirt Senior, Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) produced an eight-point, nine-rebound performance. She has had seven or more rebounds in all three contests this season.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon dropped its home opener for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
  • The Lady Knights dropped a 61-60 game to the hands of West Virginia Wesleyan on Dec. 1, 2008.
  • Maggie Mitchell (Newark, Ohio/Newark) scored in double figures for the third-straight game to begin the season. She is averaging 18.3 points per game as a Lady Knight.

  • The Lady Knights head on the road Saturday (Nov. 19) to face West Chester, their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent of the season.
