THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at Edinboro 41, Gannon 17

  • The Short Story: The Gannon football team fell behind 20-3 at halftime and never recovered during a 41-17 loss Saturday afternoon at Edinboro during the Fighting Scots' Homecoming Weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro took the opening kickoff and drove 68 yards on nine plays for the first score of the game. Walter Fletcher's one-yard run gave the home squad a 7-0 lead 3:14 into the contest.
  • After Gannon went three-and-out from its six-yard line later in the first quarter, Edinboro picked up two first downs before kicking a 29-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead midway through the opening quarter.
  • Another three-and-out by the Golden Knights led to Edinboro's second field goal with 40 seconds left in the first quarter, giving the Fighting Scots a 13-0 lead.
  • Gannon dented the scoreboard thanks to a short eight-play, 38-yard drive that started in the first quarter and ended 2:04 into the second stanza. The two big plays were passes from redshirt junior Tyler Palka (Temperance, Mich./Saline) that went for 18 yards to redshirt senior Quad Law (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) and 27 yards to redshirt junior Brendan Klemensic (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep). Junior Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington)'s 33-yard field goal capped the scoring drive.
  • Edinboro added a 41-yard touchdown pass from Jake Sisson to Alex Caratelli midway through the second quarter to assume a 20-3 lead at the intermission.
  • The Fighting Scots extended their lead to 27-3 on another Sisson touchdown pass with 2:47 left in the third quarter. The scoring play went 40 yards.
  • The two teams then split four touchdowns during the final 15 minutes.
  • Gannon scored 14 fourth-quarter points on a three-yard run by sophomore Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) and 80-yard pass from redshirt sophomore Zach Phillips (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) to sophomore Richard Makowski (Kolkwitz, Germany/Lausitzer Sportschule).

GAME NOTES
  • Edinboro produced advantages in first downs (29-21), rushing yards (172-82), passing yards (389-296) and total yards (561-378).
  • Gannon was able to create a 32:44-27:16 edge in time of possession.
  • Edinboro finished 8-of-15 on third-down conversions while Gannon went 6-of-18.
  • No Gannon player was able to reach the 30-yard rushing plateau.
  • Phillips finished 17-of-36 for 252 yards and one touchdown through the air.
  • Palka completed five of nine passes for 55 yards.
  • Quad Law (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) was the top receiving target, hauling in seven passes for 57 yards.
  • Redshirt senior Christian Carpenter (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) led all tacklers on both sides with 12 stops, one tackle for a loss and one pass break-up
  • Sophomore Anthony Howard (Temple Hills, Md./Bishop O'Connell) followed with 11 tackles and one interception.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon dropped its third consecutive game after winning its first three.
  • Edinboro snapped a three-game losing streak against Gannon, defeating the Golden Knights for the first time since October 6, 2012.
  • Carpenter led Gannon in tackles for the second consecutive game, reaching double digits for the third time this season. In the process, he tied his career-high set last week against Mercyhurst.
  • Howard reached double digits in tackles for the third consecutive game, finishing one stop shy of his career-high. His interception during the second quarter was the first of his career.
  • Sophomore A.J. Satcher (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) recorded an interception for the second consecutive week.
  • Holland moved past Kevin Cloherty (1999-02) and into ninth place all-time with 170 career points. He also extended his streak of consecutive extra point conversions to 30 dating back to last season.
