THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at Gannon 34, Seton Hill 12
  • Records: Gannon (4-3, 1-3 PSAC West), Seton Hill (4-3, 1-3 PSAC West)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: The Gannon football team out-scored Seton Hill 24-6 during the second half and rolled to a 34-12 victory on a summer-like Saturday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium in the program's 300th all-time game. HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Seton Hill drove 67 yards on 14 plays during its opening drive. The Griffins converted a trio of third-down plays, before settling for 23-yard field goal from Santiago Henao after sophomore A.J. Satcher (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) broke up SHU's fourth third-down attempt of the drive.
  • The score remained that way until Gannon tied the contest on a 25-yard field goal from junior Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) 2:54 into the second quarter. The drive started in the first quarter and ended in the second stanza after 12 plays chewed up 74 yards. Sophomore Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) had a bruising 13-yard run and redshirt sophomore Zach Phillips (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) connected with both Law brothers for double-digit gains during the drive.
  • On the ensuing kickoff, Seton Hill's Michael Benton-Ferguson appeared to have an opening down the right hash markers, but Holland stripped the ball and recovered the fumble at the Seton Hill 34-yard line.
  • Redshirt senior Tyler Johnson (North East, Pa./North East) then accounted for 30 of the 34 yards on the drive that followed, including a 17-yard touchdown run that gave Gannon a 10-3 lead at the 9:30 mark of the second quarter.
  • Seton Hill drew within 10-6 after a 27-yard field goal 2:15 before halftime.
  • The Griffins got the ball back and had a chance to take the lead into the intermission. However, Dorian Jones (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) intercepted a third-and-goal pass from the seven-yard in the end zone to turn the visitors away. The play enabled the Golden Knights to take a four-point lead into the break after an unexpected low-scoring first 30 minutes.
  • Gannon controlled the second half. The Golden Knights produced the only point of the third quarter when Phillips hit redshirt senior Quad Law (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) from 12-yards out with 3:36 left in the third frame. The play capped an eight-play, 58-yard drive that featured five passes and three runs.
  • The home squad started to pull away by opening the final quarter with a seven-play, 80-yard drive. The big plays were a 17-yard rush by redshirt junior Tyler Palka (Temperance, Mich./Saline) on third-and-five from the Gannon 25-yard line and a 33-yard pass from Palka to Quad Law (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) off a scramble on third-and-10 from the Golden Knights' 42-yard line. Palka capped the scoring drive with a play-fake that resulted in a 13-yard touchdown pass to Quad Law (Donora, Pa./Ringgold).
  • Seton Hill tried to rally one last time. After recovering a fumble in the end zone for six points, the Griffins threw an interception that Jones returned 39 yards to the Seton Hill four-yard line. Two plays later, Marcus Jones (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) hit pay dirt from three yards out, extending the lead to 31-12 with 8:02 to play.
  • A 25-yard field goal from Holland iced the 34-12 victory with 5:03 showing on the clock.
