There was a little something extra to play for on Friday (Oct. 7) night at Clarion.
The Gannon Lady Knights were a part of Clarion's Breast Cancer Awareness match and GU certainly played with a lot of heart and determination in the match, downing the Golden Eagles in four sets, 25-17, 25-21, 24-26, 25-17.
In set one Gannon led 16-12 before reeling off an 8-3 run that put the set out of reach at 24-15. In the run
Jordyn Thiery (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) had two service aces while
Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) crushed two kills.
Gannon led 23-21 in set two when Clarion made two miscues to give Gannon the set victory.
Gannon dropped a close third set, 26-24, but bounced back in set four with a 25-17 victory.
The victory marks the 15
th win in 17 tries this season. The Lady Knights have the same mark after 17 matches as the 2014 Lady Knights that went 24-7 made a trip to the NCAA tournament.
GU improves to 4-1 in the Pensylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), trailing Edinboro by just one game in the Northwest Division.
Sara Crandall (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Cattaraugus-Little Valley) notched a team-high 23 digs, adding in eight assists.
Kren posted a double-double, collecting 14 kills and 14 digs in the contest.
Kren passed Mandi Altomari for fourth all-time in career digs (1,378) at Gannon. Altomari tallied 1,364 digs in her career from 2000-03.
Carolyn Knollman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) led the team with 44 assists. She's averaging 10.1 assists per set this season.
Clarion falls to 9-8 overall, 3-2 in the conference.
The Lady Knights travel to Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, Oct. 7, to face off against the Crimson Hawks. GU leads the all-time series, 34-10.
