ERIE, Pa. - The Edinboro and Gannon volleyball teams sit one-two respectively in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Northwest Division and Friday (Oct. 21) night the two squared off in a playoff-like atmosphere at the Hammermill Center.
Edinboro took control early, winning the first two sets, but Gannon stormed back in epic fashion, winning the next three sets and capturing a five-set victory, 22-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18, 18-16.
Tied at 22 in the first set, a Gannon miscue and two pro-Edinboro plays produced an opening set victory for the Fighting Scots, 25-22.
Edinboro dominated set two as the Fighting Scots jumped out to a 14-4 lead and cruised to 25-14 victory.
The momentum started to change mid-way through the third set. Down 10-8, Gannon went on a modest 8-4 run to take a 16-14 advantage. The match progressed to a tie at 21 and Gannon ended the set with a service ace from

The Lady Knights put on a clinic to begin set four.
Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio /Solon) started the rally with a kill and Gannon jumped out to 9-2 advantage before Edinboro called timeout. After the momentary pause the Lady Knights picked up right where they left off. Kills by
Beka Smith (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili),
Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and
Maggie Wilhelm (Euclid, Ohio/Lake Catholic) had Gannon with a 20-5 lead. Edinboro attempted to get back in the set but the Lady Knights won it, 25-18.
Both teams had an opportunity to win the decisive set five. Tied at 14,
Beka Smith (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) took a
Carolyn Knollman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) set and crushed it to the floor to give GU a 15-14 lead. A
Lauren Beck (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) attack error knotted the set back at 15. Another GU miscue put the Fighting Scots up 16-15 but a Kren kill kept the set alive at 16's. Beck smashed GU's 17
th point and a following Edinboro attack error gave the Lady Knights the comeback victory.
The win broke Edinboro's 17 match win-streak it had since Sept. 3. Edinboro hasn't beaten Gannon in the Hammermill Center since 2008, a string of eight attempts.
