Gannon Women's Soccer Team Battles Edinboro to Scoreless Tie; Shuts Out Fourth Consecutive Opponent (Video)

  • The Short Story: Gannon hit a post in the 75th minute and senior Shannon Differ (Brampton, Ontario /Notre Dame C.S.S.) recorded six saves as the Lady Knights battled Edinboro to a double-overtime scoreless tie Tuesday night at Sox Harrison Stadium in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament second-round contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Edinboro out-shot Gannon 9-5 during the scoreless first half, but the Lady Knights had their chances with a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
  • Gannon put four of its five shots on goal, but was denied each time.
  • The second half was played on even terms with Edinboro holding a slim 7-6 edge in shots. However, the Fighting Scots took all four corner kicks during the second half.
  • Differ came up big several times during the second half, registering three saves and thwarting several passes into the center.
  • Gannon's best scoring opportunity came in the 75th minute. The Lady Knights got behind the defense to force a one-on-one with the Edinboro goalkeeper who came out of the net. After dodging the goalkeeper to the right, the ensuing shot was drilled off the right post.
  • Only three combined shots were taken during the first overtime and none were credited in the second overtime as the two rivals settled for a scoreless tie.

  • Edinboro produced advantages in shots (17-13) and fewest fouls (10-13).

  • Edinboro is listed among others receiving votes in the latest NSCAA Top 25 Poll and tabbed fourth in the NSCAA Atlantic regional rankings.
  • Tuesday's contest was a rematch of last year's two postseason affairs between the two programs in the PSAC semifinals and NCAA Division II Tournament second round. Both matches were played at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • Differ moved into a tie with Maggie Brinkman (2008-12) for third place all-time at Gannon with her 11th career shutout. It was her third of the season.
  • Gannon played its first scoreless tie since battling East Stroudsburg through overtime without goals November 1, 2012 in the PSAC Quarterfinals at McConnell Family Stadium. The Warriors eventually advanced in the tournament on penalty kicks.
  • Differ continued to add to her program record for career goalkeeper victories with her 32nd.
  • Gannon has shut out four consecutive opponents for the first time since opening the 2012 campaign with five straight shutouts.
