Gannon Men's Basketball Team Fall Short in Second-Half Opener at Kutztown

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: at Kutztown 80, Gannon 49

  • The Short Story: The Kutztown men's basketball team erased a nine-point deficit against Gannon with a 21-0 run over the final eight minutes of the first half en route to an 80-49 victory Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover action at Keystone Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After three lead changes and one tie during the opening three minutes, Gannon began the take charge. Leading 15-13, the Golden Knights ripped off eight consecutive points to assume a 23-13 advantage with 9:41 left in the first half.
  • Senior Tony Boykins (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) started the run with a lay-up, before freshman C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./St. Thomas More) hit consecutive three-pointers.
  • Gannon held Kutztown without a field goal for five minutes and eight seconds during the run.
  • The Golden Knights owned a 25-16 lead after senior Jon Dogbo (Paris, France/Redemption Christian (N.Y.) Academy) scored on a lay-up at the 8:02 mark.
  • Kutztown took over at that point, out-scoring Gannon 21-0 during the final eight minutes to enter halftime with a 37-25 lead. The Golden Knights missed all 10 shots and both free throw attempts while turning the ball over four times during the final eight minutes.
  • The run continued in the second half as Kutztown used an early 16-0 run to put the game away. The blitz pushed the Golden Bears' lead to 57-30 with 11:53 to play.
  • In all, Kutztown combined the two shutout stretches into a 41-5 run over the span of 15 minutes and 59 seconds of both halves.
  • Gannon finished 2-of-17 from the field and 1-of-4 from the free throw line during the huge run. The Golden Knights also committed 14 turnovers during that stretch. Ten turnovers came during the opening eight minutes of the second half, including turnovers on six consecutive possessions.
  • Kutztown grabbed its largest lead of the afternoon at 74-41 on Will Adam's lay-up with 3:36 remaining.
  • Another Adams lay-up with 46 seconds left capped the scoring, giving Kutztown an 80-49 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Sunday's game ended a 14-day holiday break that included an NCAA-mandated seven-day dead period with no practices or athletic-related activities.
  • Kutztown was listed among others receiving votes in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Top 25 Poll.
  • Gannon played the game without leading scorer Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) who sat out with an illness.
  • Junior Kevin Kuteyi (Lanham, Md./Duval) led the Gannon scoring attack with 17 points, hitting 7-of-15 shots and 3-of-5 three-point attempts.
  • Freshman Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn./St. Thomas More) chipped in a season-high 12 points.
  • Sophomore Isaiah Eisendorf (Los Angeles, Calif./Springbrook, Md.) dished out a career-high four assists while freshman Cyril Clarke (Tema, Ghana/Nandom) tied a season-high with five rebounds.
  • Asuncion-Byrd made his first appearance since November 22 due to an injury, scoring six points in 11 minutes.
  • Freshman Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) dressed for the first time this season, logging one minute of action.
  • Senior Cory Bailey (North East, Pa./North East) also saw his first playing time of the season.
  • Gannon shot 38.3 percent (18-47) from the field, 50 percent (6-12) from three-point range and 50 percent (7-14) from the free throw line. 
  • Kutztown's Ryan Connolly led all scorers on both sides with 29 points, including a 13-of-15 showing at the free throw line.
  • Anthony Lee added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
  • Kutztown shot 46.2 percent (24-52) from the floor, 30 percent (6-20) from behind the arc and 66.7 percent (26-39) from the charity stripe.
  • The Golden Bears produced large advantages in points in the paint (36-16) and points off turnovers (31-7).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Kutztown defeated Gannon for only the second time in 15 all-time meetings and first time since a 75-59 victory at Keystone Arena in 2009-10. Sunday's decision snapped Gannon's four-game win streak in the series.
  • Gannon has dropped eight consecutive regular-season games for the first time since losing nine straight December 5, 1956-January 15, 1957.
  • Kuteyi reached double digits in scoring for the fifth consecutive game and eighth time this season.
  • Gardener produced double-digit points for the third straight contest.
  • Gannon recorded its best three-point field goal percentage (.500) of the season.
  • Kutztown became the fourth Gannon opponent this season to take at least 30 free throws.
  • Gannon dropped its first game back from the holiday break for the third consecutive season.
  • Kutztown won its 10th consecutive home game dating back to last season.
