GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After four lead changes during the opening five minutes, it was all Gannon Wednesday night. Trailing 9-8, junior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) drilled a three-pointer to ignite an 18-3 run.
  • The Dogan three-pointer was the second of six consecutive triples by the Golden Knights. Junior Kevin Kuteyi (Lanham, Md./Duval) began the streak, before hitting four more in a row after Dogan's three-pointer. His fifth long-range basket of the half gave Gannon a 22-12 lead.
  • Freshman Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn./St. Thomas More) followed with a pair of lay-ups to cap the run, giving the Golden Knights a 26-12 advantage with 11:37 left in the first half.
  • The lead sat at 32-20 later in the first half when freshman C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./St. Thomas More) duplicated Kuteyi's effort. Asuncion-Byrd hit three consecutive three-pointers during a single-man 9-2 run that pushed the Gannon lead to 41-22 at the 3:52 mark.
  • Asuncion-Byrd wasn't done, hitting another two triples in the final 72 seconds of the first half. The final dagger came from the right wing as time expired, giving the Golden Knights a 49-29 lead at the intermission.
  • Another Kuteyi three-pointer and a lay-up from senior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) gave the home squad its biggest lead of the evening at 61-37 with 15:18 to play.
  • Mansfield slowly chipped away and eventually drew within 76-63 on Matt Tamanosky's old-fashion three-point play at the 2:05 mark. However, the Mountaineers were unable to get any closer the rest of the way before suffering an 80-67 setback.

GAME NOTES

  • Asuncion-Byrd followed with a season-high 19 points, aided by a season-best five three-pointers.
  • Toupane came off the bench to chip in 10 points during 21 minutes of court time.
  • Junior Marcus Jones (Brantford, Ontario/Athlete Institute) tied a career-high with seven assists compared to only one turnover in 20 minutes.
  • Junior Emmanuel Matey (Lanham, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) hauled down a career-high nine rebounds.
  • Freshman Joe Fustine (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) scored his first career points two games into his collegiate career.

  • Gannon won the bench battle with a 38-13 scoring edge beyond the starters.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon's 12 three-pointers represented the program's most since hitting 12 during an 88-58 victory against Kutztown on January 3, 2009.
  • The Golden Knights' 11 three-pointers during the first half were the program's most in a half since at least the 2001-02 campaign.
  • Kuteyi finished one point shy of his career-high, but did set a personal best in three-pointers made. He reached double digits in scoring for the sixth consecutive game and ninth time this season.
  • Asuncion-Byrd shattered his previous season-high of six points set Sunday at Kutztown. He scored eight points during his first four career games, before setting season-highs in points and three-pointers.
  • Gannon had two key players return Wednesday night. Toupane played after missing Sunday's game at Kutztown with an illness. Dogan returned after missing two contests with an injury. Asuncion-Byrd played his second consecutive game after missing eight games with an injury.
  • All 15 Golden Knights in uniform played.
  • Gannon shot 50 percent or better from three-point range in consecutive games for the first time since November 15-19, 2014.
  • The Golden Knights dished out a season-high 22 assists, representing their highest single-game total since recording 24 during an 81-55 victory against Bloomsburg on January 4, 2013.
  • Gannon had eight more assists than turnovers, marking its best ratio since posting a 21-8 slate during an 86-63 win at Edinboro on January 16, 2013.
  • The Golden Knights' 13-point victory was their largest of the season.
  • Gannon snapped an eight-game losing streak which was the program's longest since losing nine straight December 5, 1956-January 15, 1957.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will enjoy the first of its two PSAC bye dates this Saturday, January 9.
  • The Golden Knights return to action Wednesday, January 13 at California (Pa.).
  • Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
  • The contest can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400 and via the 90.5 WERG online stream at www.wergfm.com.
  • Gannon leads the all-time series against California (Pa.) 14-12, but is only 3-8 on the Vulcans' home floor. However, the Golden Knights have won two of their last three meetings at Cal.
  • The two programs have split the last two regular-season series.
