Gannon Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches on Opening Day of Troy Banner Memorial Tournament

THE RUNDOWN
  • Tournament: Tony Banner Memorial Tournament
  • Location: Tippin Gymnasium - Clarion, Pa.
  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's volleyball team opened the 2015 season by splitting a pair of matches during the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament Friday at the Tippin Gymnasium in Clarion, Pa. The Lady Knights fell to Hillsdale in the first match with set scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 25-23 before defeating Indianapolis in three sets with scores of 25-21, 29-27 and 25-20.

HOW IT HAPPENED MATCH ONE
  • Score: Hillsdale 3, Gannon 0 (25-22, 25-12, 23-25)
  • Records: Gannon (0-1) |  Hillsdale (1-0)

THE BASICS
  • Gannon took a 10-5 lead on an attack error by Hayley Booms before Hillsdale would slowly start to chip away at the lead.
  • Four consecutive points pulled Hillsdale within two of the Lady Knights, 16-14. Jordan Denmark's service ace would tie the match at 17 and a bad set by Carolyn Knollman allowed Hillsdale to take a 18-17 lead.
  • The Lady Knights made a final push, scoring three points to draw within 24-22. However, Hillsdale hung on to win the first set 25-22.
  • In the second match, Hillsdale went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 8-1 lead and never looked back.  The Lady Knights' only lengthy run of the set came with three consecutive points, cutting the lead to 22-11. The Chargers eventually won the set 25-12.
  • Leading the third set 10-7, Hillsdale tallied five points to take a 12-11 lead. Gannon took its final lead of 15-14, before Hillsdale went on for the final 25-23 finish.
  • Junior Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) led the Lady Knights with 12 kills, while senior Lynne Hibbard (West Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable) tallied 10 kills.
  • Sophomore Sara Crandall (Cattaraugus, N.Y./Cattaraugus-Little Valley) recorded 12 digs, while senior Morgan Walters (Girard, Ohio/Girard) generated 20 assists for the team.

  • Score: Gannon 3, Indianapolis 0 (25-21,29-27, 25-20)
  • Records: Gannon (1-1) | Indianapolis (1-1)

THE BASICS
  • Kren picked up where she left off, leading the Lady Knights with 15 kills. Sophomore Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio/Solon) chipped in with 12 kills.
  • Crandall recored another 16 digs.
  • Gannon went on a small 8-4 run in the first set, before Jordan Thiery (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) served up two service aces. The Lady Knights closed out the first set going on a 4-2 run and winning the first set 25-21.
  • The second set saw a lot of back-and-forth as Indianapolis controlled much of the set, but the Lady Knights were able to battle back. The squad scored the final three points to secure the victory.
  • Gannon opened the third set with three straight points. Indianapolis answered with a pair of points, before the Lady Knights gained control. Gannon grabbed its biggest lead at 14-8 lead.
  • The Lady Knights generated their biggest lead of the set at 21-14, before eventually settling for a 25-20 victory.

  • Indianapolis is among others receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AFCA) Preseason Top 25 Poll.
