HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon had several scoring opportunities early, including a pair of shots that Slippery Rock goalkeeper Charlotte Elrod tipped over the crossbar at the last second.
  • Senior Kaitlyn Kissell (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) had the first chance in the eighth minute, but her shot was tipped over the crossbar.
  • Senior Mani Brueckner (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) followed with a shot from 20 yards out on the right side in the 10th minute, but Elrod was up to the task again with a tip over the top of the goal.
  • Gannon finally broke through in the 23rd minute. After a foul, junior defender Olivia Augustyniak (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) lifted a perfect lob shot from 50 yards out. The Rock goalkeeper was only able to get a fingertip on the ball, before it went into the goal for a 1-0 lead.
  • Brueckner doubled the lead 3:28 later, bending a corner kick from the left side into the net for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Slippery Rock opened the second half with the first three shots, but junior Shannon Differ (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame C.S.S.) turned away all three attempts.
  • The visitors set up a frantic finish by scoring with 10:54 remaining. A penalty shot was granted when a Slippery Rock player was hauled down entering the box on the right side. Sam Thornton then converted, scoring into the upper right corner.
  • However, neither team could produce another shot during the rest of the second half as Gannon secured a 2-1 victory.
