HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two squads battled through a scoreless first half, but it wasn't without any scoring opportunities.
  • Kutztown almost scored early when Diana Malanga took a point-blank shot from 15 yards out in front 1:09 into the contest, but junior Shannon Differ (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame C.S.S.) stood up for the save.
  • Junior Kaitlyn Kissell (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) hit the crossbar in the 15th minute.
  • Kutztown responded with a good look in the 25th minute, but Emily Ross' chip attempt went over the crossbar.
  • The last solid opportunity of the first half came in the 37th minute. Putnam fired a shot that appeared to be heading inside the right post after a scramble, but a Kutztown defender was able to kick it away to preserve the scoreless tie.
  • Gannon's first scoring chance of the second half came in the 54th minute. Redshirt senior Michelle Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) ripped a shot towards the left side of the net, but Kutztown goalkeeper Deanna Messner made a diving stop to her right.
  • The Lady Knights hit another crossbar in the 71st minute when senior Mani Brueckner (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) took her turn.
  • Gannon finally broke through in the 73rd minute. Senior Sammy Valloud (Erie, Pa./McDowell) initially ripped a shot that was turned away by the Kutztown goalkeeper, but Putnam was charging towards the goal and knocked the rebound over the scrambling keeper for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lady Knights then closed out the contest by out-shooting the Golden Bears 5-0 the rest of the way.
