Newby graduated from Gannon in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in sports management, before being drafted second overall by the Saint John Mill Rats in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) Draft.
The Toronto, Ontario, native was a two-year letterwinner at Gannon after transferring from NCAA Division I Eastern Kentucky prior to the 2012-13 season. The 6-foot-3 point guard played in 43 games, starting 32. He averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 0.8 steals in 19.2 minutes per game. Newby shot 45.6 percent (62-136) from the field and 35.7 percent (5-14) from three point range.
Newby converted 16 of 19 free throws during his senior campaign. He scored a season-high 11 points against rival Mercyhurst. Newby netted eight points as the starting point guard during a 66-64 victory against the University of Charleston in the NCAA Division II Tournament first round.
