The Short Story: The Gannon softball team earned a split with Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action Saturday at Gannon University Field. The Lady Knights captured a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Griffins in game one on a two-RBI single by junior Alexa Archambeault (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads). In the second game, the Griffins used a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Lady Knights, 5-3. Prior to the opening game, the Lady Knights honored both Jess Rectenwald (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills) and Meghan Cunha (Geneva, Ohio / Edgewood) in a Senior Day celebration.
GAME ONE SCORE: at Gannon 4, Seton Hill 3
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
- Seton Hill earned a 1-0 lead over Gannon in the top of the first to break the scoreless game. The Griffins' first run came on a solo shot by Ashley Perillo with one out.
- Gannon tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Loading the bases on back-to-back walks and a Griffin fielding error, Rectenwald scored the Lady Knights' first run on a wild pitch by Kaitlyn Kutchman.
- The Griffins doubled up on the Lady Knights, 4-2, with a run each in the fourth and fifth innings. Perillo hit her second solo shot of the afternoon in the fourth. With two outs on the board, Christine Henderson hit an RBI-double down the left-field line to take the two-run advantage.
- Following a Griffin pitching change to open the sixth, Rectenwald drilled a solo home run to center field to pull to within one, 4-3.
- A leadoff single up the middle by junior Alyssa Bates (Greensburg, Pa. / Hempfield) opened the bottom of the seventh. With runners in scoring position, junior Alexa Archambeault (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) drove in both Bates and junior Sarah DiOrio (Hunker, Pa. / Hempfield Area) on a two-RBI single through the right side to capture the 4-3 victory.
GAME NOTES | GAME ONE
- Despite the loss, Seton Hill held an 11-9 hitting advantage over Gannon.
- Freshman Jackie Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep), Cunha, Bates and Archambeault produced two hits each.
- Rectenwald hit her fourth home run of the season and 14th of her career.
- Rectenwald (8-4) earned a complete-game victory. She allowed three earned runs off 11 hits. The senior also fanned five batters in the win.
- The victory marked the 100th career victory for this year's senior class.
GAME TWO SCORE: Seton Hill 5, at Gannon 3
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
- Gannon secured a 2-0 lead over Seton Hill in the bottom of the first. With runners at second and third, redshirt senior Katie Dunn (Clarkston, Mich. / Troy) sent a two-RBI single down the right-field line to drive in sophomore Jen Moran (West Mifflin, Pa. / Fox Chapel) and Rectenwald.
- Seton Hill cut the Lady Knights' lead in half, 2-1, in the top of the second on an RBI-single.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Knights pushed their lead to 3-1. Following a ground out to open the inning, Archambeault blasted a solo shot over the right-center fence to give the Lady Knights the two-run lead.
- Seton Hill earned the 5-3 win with four runs in the top of the fifth. An RBI-triple opened the Griffins' scoring followed by an RBI-single to tie the game at 3-3. The Griffins earned the 5-3 lead and eventual win on a two-RBI double by Lauren Sauerwein.
GAME NOTES | GAME TWO
- Rectenwald went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Dunn recorded two RBIs on a single in the first inning.
- Seton Hill outhit the Lady Knights, 8-5, in the nightcap.
- Sophomore starter Olivia Gumbita (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) (11-3) pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters. She allowed five earned runs off eight hits.
UP NEXT
Gannon hosts PSAC Western Division opponent Pitt-Johnstown April 26, in its regular-season home finale at GU Field. Game one begins at 1 p.m. Beyond the games, the Lady Knights will host its Pink Game during the opener. Raffle tickets and balloons, which attendees can write a note to a loved one who is battling cancer or in memory, will be available for purchase throughout game one. A balloon release will be conducted between the first and second games. All proceeds will be donated to local organization Linked by Pink.
