Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Remains Perfect Against Edinboro; Moves to 8-0 All-Time with 13-8 Victory

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's lacrosse team snapped a 7-7 second-half tie with six consecutive goals and moved to 8-0 all-time against Edinboro with a 13-8 victory Wednesday afternoon at Sox Harrison Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon initially opened a 5-1 lead, breaking a 1-1 tie with four consecutive goals.
  • Freshmen Ileyana Little (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) kick started the run with a pair of free position goals.
  • Senior Kelley Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith) scored unassisted and freshman Kierstyn Haight's (Oshawa, Ontario/Maxwell Heights) free-position score followed for a 5-1 lead with 3:09 left in the first half.
  • Edinboro scored with 10 seconds remaining in the half, snapping a scoreless streak of 23 minutes and 43 seconds while cutting the deficit to 5-3 at the intermission.
  • The rivalry match was later tied at five, six and seven during the second half.
  • Gannon produced the decisive run with six consecutive goals, turning a 7-7 deadlock into a 13-7 Lady Knight advantage with 8:51 to play.
  • Little's unassisted goal snapped the tie, before King's unassisted tally 17 seconds later eventually proved to be the game-winner.
  • Sophomore Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) netted three of the six goals during the run. Her final score capped the blitz with 8:51 remaining.
  • Edinboro managed one more goal at the 7:31 mark, but neither team was able to find the back of the net again for the remainder of the match.

GAME NOTES
  • The contest was close on the statistical sheet. Gannon held advantages in shots (32-26), draw controls (15-8) and fewest turnovers (10-16).
  • Edinboro had the upper hand in saves (16-11), ground balls (21-18) and fewest fouls (16-22).
  • Haight and Mitchell led Gannon with three goals each. Haight also had four draw controls and two ground balls.
  • Junior Becky Hilker (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central SS), Little and King chipped in two goals apiece. King and Hilker added five and three draw controls, respectively.
  • Sophomore Micky Bowen (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) headlined the defensive unit with six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Freshman Alexis Strouse (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) recorded 11 saves between the pipes.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon remained perfect against Edinboro, moving to 8-0 in the all-time series.
  • The Lady Knights were making their first trip to Edinboro's Sox Harrison Stadium since a 15-3 victory on March 23, 2012.
  • Mitchell recorded her sixth hat trick of the season. She won multiple draw controls for the fifth time.
  • Haight also produced her sixth hat trick of the campaign. She tied season-highs in draw controls (4) and ground balls (2).
  • King had at least four assists for the third time in four matches, falling one shy of her season-high. She won at least five draw controls for the 11th time this season.
  • Both Hilker and Little produced their sixth multiple-goals efforts.

  • Gannon's 11 assists were one shy of its season-high set during an 18-7 win against Lake Erie on March 19.
