Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Rolls Past Wheeling Jesuit 18-8 in Non-Conference Action

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: Gannon scored 12 of the first 14 goals and cruised to an 18-8 victory Saturday afternoon at Wheeling Jesuit. In the process, the Lady Knights won their second consecutive match to even its overall record at 2-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Wheeling Jesuit scored the first goal 54 seconds into the contest, Gannon responded with three consecutive scores and never trailed again.
  • Freshman Ileyana Little (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) tallied the first goal unassisted, before assisting on goals from senior Jessica Kallenborn (Elmira, N.Y./Horseheads) and sophomore Ashley Mozingo (Fallston, Md./Fallston) for a 3-1 lead.
  • Leading 3-2 moments later, Gannon ripped off nine straight goals to produce a running clock 5:35 into the second half.
  • Goals by junior Becky Hilker (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central SS) and sophomore Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) sandwiched a pair of scores from freshman Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) during the final 15 minutes of the first half to give the Lady Knights a 7-2 halftime lead.
  • The run continued during the second half with five more goals. Four different Lady Knights accounted for those five scores, including Mitchell's third goal that gave the Lady Knights a 12-2 edge with 24:25 remaining.
  • The two programs split the final 12 goals, before Gannon walked away with a 10-goal victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest ended a season-opening four-game road swing.
  • Mitchell led Gannon's offensive unit with four goals, two assists and six points. She tied her career-high in goals set during an 18-7 victory at Kutztown on April 26, 2014.
  • King also netted four goals to go along with seven draw controls and two caused turnovers. She has won seven draw controls during three of the first four matches.
  • Hilker, Mozingo and senior Kelley Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith) added two goals each.
  • Little, Kallenborn, sophomore Yohana Romero (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) and freshman Marie Brockman (Erdenheim, Pa./Springfield Township) chipped in one goal each.
  • Kallenborn and Romero produced their first goal of the season.
  • Little dished out a team-best four assists after having only two during the first three contests.
  • Freshman Alexis Strouse (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) made her collegiate debut in goal, needing only two saves to record her first career victory.
  • Gannon out-shot Wheeling Jesuit 33-14 and won 18 of 24 draw controls.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is 2-2 after four matches for the third consecutive season.
  • The Lady Knights' 18 draw controls were their most since winning 21 during an 18-7 victory at Kutztown on April 26, 2014.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to action Thursday, March 19 against Lake Erie at Gannon University Field. The home opener is scheduled for 4 p.m.
  • The Gannon-Lake Erie contest was originally scheduled for March 11, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
