Gannon Women's Lacrosse Team Opens Season With Setback at No. 9 Florida Southern

  • The Short Story: Ninth-ranked Florida Southern broke open a close match with eight consecutive goals late in the second half and pulled away with an 18-7 victory Sunday afternoon against Gannon. It was the Lady Knights' season opener and beginning of a three-match southern road swing during their spring break.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Ashley Mozingo (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored Gannon's first goal of the season 2:57 into the opener, tying the contest at one.
  • Florida Southern followed with six of the next seven goals to assume a 7-2 lead.
  • Freshman Kierstyn Haight (Oshawa, Ontario/Maxwell Heights) produced the only Gannon score during the run and later found the back of the net with eight seconds left to bring the Lady Knights within 7-3 at halftime.
  • Florida Southern led 10-6 after the two teams played on even terms during the first seven minutes of the second half.
  • Gannon received goals from freshman Leilani King (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy), sophomore Tessa Mitchell (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) and senior Heather Vouros (Victor, N.Y./Victor) during the opening seven minutes.
  • Florida Southern then put the match away with eight consecutive goals.
  • Gannon went 22 minutes and 13 seconds without a score until Mozingo scored for the second time with 55 seconds remaining.

  • Sunday's contest was Gannon's season opener while Florida Southern was playing its third match of the season.
  • Florida Southern is ranked ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national rankings.
  • Haight and King recorded their first career goals in collegiate debuts.
  • Mitchell dished out three of Gannon's four assists.
  • Redshirt freshman Hanna Magee (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) recorded 14 saves during her collegiate debut between the pipes. The Lady Knights had more saves in a match only three times last season.
