The Short Story: In consecutive games, the Gannon women's basketball team was able to overcome a second-half deficit en route to a victory. Trailing by 13 points in the opening minute of the second half, the Lady Knights rallied for a 74-71 win over Le Moyne at the Hammermill Center Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup. Taking a break in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action, the Lady Knights closed their non-conference slate with a win. The Lady Knights were led by senior
Mollie Sebald (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) with 19 points followed by senior
Brittany Batts (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) with 16 and senior
Nettie Blake (Jersey City, N.J./Marist) with 15.
HOW IT HAPPENED- In the closing seconds of the first half, junior
Jennie Thies (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern) forced a steal at the top of arc. Popping the ball free, Thies was able to beat out Le Moyne's Tess Pucello to the loose ball with the junior dropping in a layup to move the score to 39-32.
- The momentum from Thies' last-second play looked to carry over into the break. The Dolphins' Ailayia Demand had other plans after taking the inbound pass from Lauren Salzbrenner. Demand crossed half court and buried the shot from 40 feet out as time expired to take a 42-32 lead into halftime.
- Coming out of the break, the Dolphins' Emily Greer hit a three just 16 seconds in to move her team's lead to 45-32. The 13-point deficit was the largest lead for the Dolphins in the game.
- Gannon answered back with a 10-0 run to bring Le Moyne's lead down to three, 45-42, with 17:22 remaining. Sebald accounted for eight of the Lady Knights' 10 points in the offensive explosion including a pair of threes. The Dolphins missed on all three of their attempts from the field during the stretch.
- The Dolphins were able to bounce between a five- and seven-point lead for the next three minutes and 33 seconds. The Lady Knights were finally able to break through, scoring 12 unanswered points to capture a 60-53 lead over the Dolphins. A layup by Sebald followed a layup by sophomore
Brianna Brennan (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) on a Batts assist moved GU to within three, 53-50. Batts managed to lock the game up at 53 all on a three setup by Sebald with 12:53 remaining in regulation.
- The Lady Knights pushed ahead on an and-one by Sebald, 56-53, as the senior drove inside on a layup before being fouled. Berchtold cut in and out of the Dolphins' defense to move to the hoop, laying the ball in to extend the Lady Knights to 58-53. Working inside, Thies capped the run for a 60-53 lead with 10:46 left on the clock.
- The Dolphins answered back with a 7-1 run to pull within one of the Lady Knights, 61-60, with 6:54 remaining. Connecting on six consecutive attempts at the foul line and a Blake layup, the Lady Knights moved their lead to 69-62.
- With under five minutes left, the Dolphins fought back to within three of the Lady Knights' lead three times. Their final attempt came on a three from Pucello, 74-71, with 30 seconds remaining in the contest. Despite two long-range attempts for the Dolphins in the final 10 seconds, both chances missed the mark. A block by Thies on the Dolphins' final chance by Greer with two seconds on the clock sealed the Lady Knights' 74-71 victory.
