Gannon Women's Basketball Team Defeats Lock Haven For 14th Consecutive Time; Neighbors Moves in Gannon's All-Time Top 10 in Three-Pointers

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's basketball team used a 14-0 fourth-quarter run to dispose of Lock Haven for the 14th consecutive time Friday night with a 72-62 road victory. Senior Morgan Neighbors (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) led all scorers on both sides with 20 points, reaching the 20-point plateau for the third consecutive game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the two teams split the first 10 points, Gannon forged ahead with an 11-1 run. Neighbors ignited the rally with a three-pointer and pair of free throws. Sophomore McKenna Shives (Struthers, Ohio/Struthers) followed with a triple and jumper, before junior Brianna Brennan's (Woodhaven, Mich./Woodhaven) free throw gave the Lady Knights a 16-6 edge with 28 seconds left in the first quarter.
  • Lock Haven went 3:34 without a point until Rachael McDaniel hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left. Another Brennan free throw with two ticks remaining capped the first-quarter scoring with Gannon holding a 17-9 advantage.
  • Gannon assumed its biggest first-half lead at 29-14 following a three-pointer by Shives at the 4:29 mark of the second quarter.
  • Seven consecutive Lock Haven points late in the first half drew the Bald Eagles within 34-28, but freshman Elissa Ellerbrock (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) sank two free throws to give the Lady Knights a 36-28 advantage at the intermission.
  • Gannon led throughout the entire second half, holding leads as small as one point and as large as 16 points.
  • Lock Haven slowly chipped away at the Gannon lead throughout the third quarter. Trailing 42-37, the Bald Eagles clawed within 42-41 after consecutive baskets.
  • Senior Jennie Thies (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern) answered with a lay-up, before redshirt junior Lanise Saunders (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) followed with a jumper. The big shot in the waning moments of the third quarter was Brennan's lone three-pointer of the game with one minute left, pushing Gannon's lead back to 51-43. The Lady Knights eventually ended the third stanza with a 52-48 advantage.
  • Gannon turned the game into a no-doubter during the final 10 minutes. Leading 52-50, the Lady Knights ripped off 14 consecutive points. Four different players scored during the decisive run, led by six points from Neighbors. She hit a three-pointer midway through the run, before capping the stretch with a jumper and free throw to give the visitors a 66-50 lead at the 3:36 mark.
  • Lock Haven suffered a long scoreless stretch for the second time, going 6:46 without a point. The Bald Eagles went 6-of-19 with three turnovers during the final quarter before the final horn sounded.

GAME NOTES
  • Neighbors led all scorers on both sides with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. She finished 6-of-9 from the field, 5-of-6 from three-point range and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
  • Brennan followed with 14 points. Shives and Ellerbrock chipped in 11 points each.
  • Thies accounted for almost one-third of Gannon's rebounds with 11 to go along with seven points.
  • Senior Amanda Berchtold (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) ran the offense with six assists and only one turnover in 28 minutes.
  • Gannon shot 41.5 percent (22-55) from the field, a season-best 60 percent (9-15) from three-point range and 57.6 percent (19-33) from the free throw line.
  • McDaniel topped the Lock Haven scorers with 28 points and six rebounds.
  • J.J. Hilliard and Loren Kaiser added 15 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Lock Haven shot 36.4 percent (24-66) from the floor, 46.2 percent (6-13) from behind the arc and 57.1 percent (8-14) from the charity stripe.
  • Gannon tied season-highs in steals (11) and blocks (3).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon defeated Lock Haven for the 14th consecutive time.
