Gannon Men's Basketball Team Concludes Division I Weekend With Loss at George Washington

  • The Short Story: The Gannon men's basketball team committed 36 fouls which led to 49 free throws as NCAA Division I George Washington posted a 92-47 exhibition victory Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • George Washington held Gannon scoreless for the first 3:42, jumping out to a 10-0 lead in the process.
  • The Golden Knights battled back with 10 consecutive points of their own, tying the contest on C.J. Asuncion-Byrd's (Greenwich, Conn./St. Thomas More) three pointer at the 14:58 mark. Asuncion-Byrd hit two three-pointers and senior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) hit a triple during the run.
  • Gannon's defense held GW scoreless for 2:44 during the run, before Alex Mitola gave the Colonials the lead again at 16-10 with back-to-back three-pointers.
  • Leading 18-13, George Washington ripped off 14 straight points to assume control. The Colonials held the Golden Knights without a point for 3:13 and without a field goal for 5:22.
  • The home squad's biggest lead of the first half came at 35-15, before Gannon produced a 15-10 scoring advantage during the final six minutes and 32 seconds.
  • Asuncion-Byrd's third triple with 17 seconds left in the first half sent Gannon to the intermission with a 45-30 deficit.
  • George Washington bumped its lead into the 20's 90 seconds into the second half. The Colonials steadily increased the lead until assuming their biggest lead of the game at 89-42 with 2:15 to play.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest represented Gannon's final exhibition of the season and second in two nights. The Golden Knights dropped an 80-50 exhibition decision at the University of Pittsburgh Friday night.
  • Gannon is listed among others receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Preseason Top 25 Poll.
  • Asuncion-Byrd led Gannon's offensive unit with 13 points in 17 minutes, hitting 5-of-9 field goals and 3-of-6 three-pointers.
  • Toupane was the only other Golden Knight in double digits with 11 points, missing a double-double by one rebound.
  • Gannon shot 33.3 percent (15-45) from the field, 33.3 percent (7-21) from three-point range and 47.6 percent (10-21) from the free throw line.
  • Yuta Watanbe headlined a group five double-digit scorers for George Washington, producing 15 points and six rebounds.
  • Mitola followed with 13 points. Joe McDonald and Paul Jorgensen added 12 points each. Jordan Roland chipped in 10 markers.
  • The Colonials shot 47.1 percent (24-51) from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-24) from behind the arc and 75.5 percent (37-49) from the charity stripe.
  • Twenty-nine Gannon turnovers led to a 35-7 scoring edge in points off turnovers for George Washington. The Colonials also produced large advantages in bench points (48-16) and points in the paint (32-12).
  • Fifteen Golden Knights played during Saturday's exhibition, including nine who played double-digit minutes.
  • Three Gannon players fouled out and two more committed four infractions.

  • Gannon has played in exhibitions against NCAA Division I programs during the last two seasons, falling at Siena last year by a 74-63 count.
  • The Golden Knight are 0-4 all-time in exhibition games against NCAA Division I schools since 2008, including a 67-59 loss at the University of Dayton that season.
