HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon opened its biggest lead of the afternoon midway through the first half. Trailing 9-8, the Golden Knights ripped off a 13-2 run over the span of two minutes and 46 seconds.
  • Senior Jean Yves Toupane (Dakar, Senegal/Lee (Maine) Academy) recorded nine of the 13 points, including a tip-in that gave the home squad a 21-11 advantage with 8:45 left in the first half.
  • Millersville responded with a 9-2 rally, cutting the Gannon lead to 23-20 at the 3:15 mark. A three-pointer by Shawn Williams at the buzzer sent the Marauders into the break with a 28-25 deficit.
  • The visitors opened the second half with an 18-4 run over the first nine minutes to grab what appeared to be a commanding lead at 43-32.
  • Gannon didn't record its first second-half field goal until junior Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) converted a lay-up 8:34 into the second session.
  • The Golden Knights slowly began to chip away. Redshirt sophomore Marcus Jones (Brantford, Ontario/Athlete Institute) ignited a 12-0 blitz with a three-pointer. Five of the next nine points came at the free throw line, including one by Dogan that pushed Gannon ahead 44-43 with 5:08 remaining.
  • Gannon held Millersville without a point for 6:10 during the run and without a field goal for 10:12 until William's lay-up with 48 seconds left in regulation.
  • The final five minutes of regulation featured four lead changes and four ties.
  • Gannon led 54-51 after a pair of free throws from Jones with five seconds left, before Williams hit another buzzer beater. This three-pointer from the right corner forced overtime.
  • The two teams split four baskets during the first overtime, including Toupane's jumper in the paint with three seconds left that sent the teams to another extra session.
  • Both teams netted four points each again during the second overtime. Gannon took a 62-58 lead on a jumper and lay-up by Toupane, but Millersville countered with a Williams lay-up and Cornell Yarde game-tying lay-up with nine seconds showing on the clock.
  • Millersville took control during the third overtime. Williams opened the period with consecutive three-pointers. Another triple by Tommy Patterson pushed the MU lead to 71-64 with 51 seconds left.
  • The visitors then iced the victory with four free throws in the final 31 seconds.
