Gannon Football Team Rallies at Seton Hill For Third Straight Win; Clinches Third Consecutive Winning Season

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Gannon 43, at Seton Hill 28
  • Records: Gannon (6-2, 3-2 PSAC West), Seton Hill (2-6, 1-4 PSAC West)
  • Location: Greensburg, Pa. - Offutt Field
  • The Short Story: Senior Brock Jones' (Peninsula, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) 199 rushing yards en route to his 14th 100-yard rushing game during the last two seasons were part of a late fourth-quarter rally as the Gannon football team won its third consecutive game Saturday evening with a 43-28 victory at Seton Hill.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second consecutive week, Gannon wasted little time scoring while finding the end zone during its first possession.
  • The Golden Knights took the opening kickoff and went 76 yards in eight plays. Redshirt senior Liam Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio/Leipsic Local) opened the game with seven consecutive completions to four different receivers. Redshirt freshman Zach Phillips (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Park) then picked up the final five yards with a touchdown run 3:44 into the contest.
  • After Seton Hill tied the contest, Gannon immediately regained the lead on a 26-yard field goal from sophomore Karch Holland (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) with 1:50 left in the first quarter. Unlike the first series, all 53 yards during the drive came on the ground. Redshirt junior Tyler Johnson (North East, Pa./North East) accounted for 48 of those yards on five carries.
  • Seton Hill countered with a touchdown to grab its first lead of the evening (14-10) 34 seconds into the second quarter.
  • The shoot-out continued as Gannon immediately dropped a blow with another touchdown on the next possession. The Golden Knights again picked up every yard of the 63-yard drive on the ground. This time, it was Jones generating 51 of those yards. His 19-yard touchdown jaunt capped the scoring drive, but a missed extra point kept the Gannon lead at 16-14.
  • Seton Hill had the last attack of the first half. The Griffins started a drive at Gannon's 30-yard line following a three-yard punt. On third-and-17, Christian Strong connected with Larry Joshua for 32 yards and a first down. Two plays later, Brandon Stout reached the end zone with 1:56 left on the clock, sending the home squad into halftime with a 21-16 advantage.
  • The Griffins grabbed their biggest lead of the evening at 28-16 following a 12-play, 80-yard drive that opened the second half. The final 70 yards came running the ball.
  • Gannon began its comeback with a big play midway through the third quarter. On third-and-11, Nadler hit redshirt senior Joe Sobucki (Girard, Pa./Girard) for a 55-yard touchdown pass at the 6:02 mark. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the deficit at 28-22.
  • Both teams then combined for five consecutive scoreless possessions, before Gannon exploded during the final six minutes. A 15-yard pass interference call and three plays of at least 12 yards enabled the Golden Knights to forge ahead 29-28. A Jones' 14-yard touchdown run capped the go-ahead drive with 5:59 left.
  • After a Seton Hill four-and-out, Gannon tacked on another touchdown. The big play of the drive was a 41-yard run by Jones down to the two-yard line. After a three-yard loss, Nadler found redshirt senior Jesstin Hamm (Harwood, Md./DeMatha Catholic) for a five-yard touchdown catch.
  • Seton Hill had one last chance, but junior Mike Zanders (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell) returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown and sealed the victory with 38 seconds remaining.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest was part of Seton Hill's Homecoming Weekend.
  • Gannon erased a 28-16 second-half deficit by scoring the final 27 points of the game. Two years ago, the Golden Knights scored the final 19 points of a 40-21 victory. Last season, Gannon produced the final 41 points during a 58-28 win.
  • The Golden Knights produced advantages in first downs (27-19), rushing yards (280-172), passing yards (213-198), total yards (493-370) and time of possession (33:54-26:06).
  • Jones recorded his third consecutive and fifth 100-yard rushing game of the season with a season-high 199 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries. His 199 yards represented the 11th-highest single-game total in school history.
  • Nadler finished 16-of-32 for 213 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
  • Hamm led all receivers on both sides in catches (8) and yards (99).
  • After missing the first six games of the season and not making a catch last week, Sobocki broke out with four catches for 79 yards and one touchdown. It was his first touchdown since November 10, 2012 after he missed the entire 2013 and 2014 campaigns with injuries.
  • Redshirt senior Matt Astorino (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) led the defensive unit with a career-high nine tackles and one tackle for a loss.
  • Zanders recorded two interceptions, giving him four during the last three games after having zero in the first five contests.
  • True freshman Justin Brown (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) made his first career interception during the second quarter.
  • Phillips scored his first career touchdown on Gannon's opening drive.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon extended its win streak to three games. It's the second three-game win streak of the season after the squad was victorious during the first three contests of the campaign.
  • The Golden Knights clinched their third straight winning season for the first time since a school-record four consecutive winning campaigns from 1992-95.
  • Gannon scored at least 43 points for the fourth time this season.
  • Jones jumped Kevin Cloherty (1999-02) and Ron Bailey (2002-05) to move into Gannon's all-time top five in career rushing yards (2,620) despite logging carries for only two seasons.
  • Hamm has caught a touchdown pass in 13 of 14 games dating back to last season.
  • Jones moved into a tie with Gannon Hall of Famer Darmel Whitfield (2001-04) for second place all-time with his 14th career 100-yard rushing game. He sits one shy of the school record held by Sterling Pierce (1996-99).
  • Hamm jumped Kevin Cloherty (1999-02) and moved into seventh place all-time at Gannon with 170 career points.
  • Jones passed Jeremy Ditzler (2007-10) and Brendan McNicholas (2003-06) on Gannon's all-time scoring list with Saturday's two touchdowns. He now ranks third all-time at Gannon with 192 career points, sitting 30 points shy of Jon Richardson's (2006-09) school record of 222.
  • Zanders moved past Jon Miller (1994-97) and into sixth place all-time at Gannon with his ninth career interception. He will move into Gannon's top five with his next pick.
