No. 1 Gannon Women's Soccer Team Clinches PSAC Tourney Top Seed with Late Rally At Mercyhurst; Brueckner Becomes Program's All-Time Points Leader (Video)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Final Score: Gannon 2, at Mercyhurst 1
  • Records: Gannon (15-0, 13-0 PSAC), Mercyhurst (6-7-2, 5-7-2 PSAC)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Soccer Field
  • The Short Story: The No. 1-ranked Gannon women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two goals in the final 21 minutes to clinch the top seed in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament with a 2-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at rival Mercyhurst. In the process, the Lady Knights remained the only team at any level of the NCAA without a loss or tie.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mercyhurst needed only 6:17 to score first. Following a foul, Rebekah Reynolds scored off a free kick from 15 yards out for an early lead.
  • Neither team was able to record another goal in an evenly-played first half. Mercyhurst held a slight advantage, producing a 12-8 edge in shots.
  • The second half belonged entirely to Gannon. The Lady Knights out-shot the Lakers 10-1 during the final 45 minutes, creating numerous scoring opportunities.
  • Gannon drew even when senior Mani Brueckner (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) tied the match on a great individual play. She gained possession of the ball around midfield and dribbled down the left side with a defender on her hip the whole time. After dribbling into the box, Brueckner beat two defenders and the Mercyhurst goalkeeper inside the right post during the 70th minute.
  • The Lady Knights only needed one more shot to forge ahead. Senior Kaitlyn Kissell (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) started the game-winning play with a nice move towards the end line on the right side. Her crossing pass was then headed inside the left post by senior Sammy Valloud (Erie, Pa./McDowell) with 8:28 remaining in regulation.
  • Neither team was able to manage another shot the rest of the way until the horn sounded to give the Lady Knights a 2-1 come-from-behind victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Warmer weather came back to the region as temperatures reached into the 70's under sunny skies.
  • Gannon has been ranked No. 1 in the last three National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 Polls, representing its first No. 1 ranking in the program's 29-year history. The Lady Knights have been tabbed No. 1 in the last six NSCAA Atlantic regional rankings.
  • The Lady Knights held advantages in shots (18-13), corner kicks (7-6) and fewest fouls (7-6).
  • Junior Shannon Differ (Brampton, Ontario/Notre Dame C.S.S.) made three saves to remain undefeated this season in goal.
  • Valloud's game-winner was her second consecutive, fifth of the season and eighth of her career.
