GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon was off and running early, scoring on the third play from scrimmage. Jones took a short pass from redshirt senior Liam Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio/Leipsic Local) and raced 53 yards for a touchdown 69 seconds into the contest.
  • It was the start of the two rivals trading the first four touchdowns. After Edinboro tied the game, Gannon forged back ahead with a 12-play, 75-yard drive. The balanced drive included six rushes and six passes, concluding with a 32-yard touchdown run by Jones 1:40 into the second quarter.
  • Edinboro knotted the contest at 14 on a 75-yard passing touchdown from Jake Sisson to Alex Caratelli, before Gannon ripped off 21 consecutive points.
  • The Golden Knights moved back ahead 21-14 after a 10-play, 67-yard drive. Jones capped the go-ahead drive with a four-yard touchdown run at the 8:42 mark of the second quarter.
  • Following an interception by junior Mike Zanders (Charlotte, N.C. / Hopewell), Gannon only needed seven plays to march 48 yards for another score. Redshirt junior Tyler Johnson (North East, Pa./North East) picked up 25 yards on the ground, an Edinboro personal foul penalty added 15 yards and Jones ended the drive with an eight-yard touchdown jaunt.
  • Gannon forced a three-and-out on Edinboro's next drive, before going 58 yards on eight plays for another score. The two biggest plays were passes of 53 yards and 22 yards from Nadler to sophomore Brandon Mansell (New Brighton, Pa./Blackhawk). By this time, it should be no surprise who finished the drive as Jones accounted for the final yard and a 35-14 lead with 1:44 left in the first half.
  • Edinboro did manage a little momentum heading into the half. The Fighting Scots needed only six plays and 68 seconds to eat up 75 yards for another touchdown with 36 seconds left. A blocked extra point by junior Matthew Gawlik (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) left the Gannon halftime lead at 35-20.
  • Gannon used the first possession of the second half to grab its biggest lead of the evening. The Golden Knights chewed up 56 straight yards on the ground, before Nadler connected with Mansell for a six-yard touchdown on the only pass of the drive. The extra point pushed Gannon in front 42-20 midway through the third quarter.
  • Edinboro continued to fight, scoring 22 of the final 29 points. The Fighting Scots pulled with 42-35 after Jake Sission scored on a four-yard run midway through the final quarter.
  • Gannon appeared to put the game away when it answered with a touchdown on the next possession. The eight-play drive ended with Nadler's 18-yard touchdown pass to Hamm with 4:02 remaining.
  • But it wasn't over. Edinboro responded again. The Fighting Scots pulled back within a score when Sission connected with Caratelli from 22 yards out at the 1:51 mark.
  • However, Jones was able to recover the ensuing onside kick and Gannon was able to run out the clock for a 49-42 victory.

GAME NOTES

  • Gannon produced advantages in first downs (29-20), rushing yards (186-155) and time of possession (33:55-26:05).
  • Edinboro countered with leads in passing yards (364-321) and total yards (519-507).
  • Jones recorded his second consecutive and fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season with 134 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries.
  • Nadler finished 20-of-34 for 321 yards and three touchdowns. It represented his 15th career 300-yard game.
  • Jones' four rushing touchdowns tied a program record accomplished two previous times. He also had four rushing touchdowns last season at Cheyney. Jansen Jones did it against Edinboro in 2013.
