The Short Story: Senior
Justine Rodrigues (Georgetown, Ontario / Georgetown District) led the Gannon women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over the Edinboro Fighting Scots Thursday evening to open the 2014 season. Rodrigues tallied both of the Lady Knights' goals including the game-winner in the 97th minute on an unassisted effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Following a 1-1 draw in regulation, the Lady Knights used an aggressive attack in the opening overtime period to capture the victory. The Lady Knights controlled play from the start, registering three shots with the final one breaking the tie. Edinboro's two offensive-breakouts were each blown dead on an offside call.
- From 15 yards out in the 97th minute, Rodrigues struck for the second time in the contest. She buried a straight-on shot to hand the Lady Knights a 2-1 overtime victory over the Fighting Scots in the season opener. The goal was Rodrigues' second of the season and 13th of her career.
- Rodrigues' first strike came in the 15th minute of play. The senior ripped shot off an Edinboro defender with the ball bouncing in for a 1-0 Gannon lead.
- In the final 1:59 of the opening half, the Fighting Scots fired four shots including two headers off corners that went just high and wide of the goal.
- The Fighting Scots picked right back up where they left off in the first half, attacking the Lady Knights' goal. Off a Fighting Scots' corner kick by Becca Costello in the 48th minute, Ashley Devito tapped in the game-tying goal to knot the contest at 1-1.
GAME NOTES- Sophomore goalkeeper
Shannon Differ (Brampton, Ontario / Notre Dame C.S.S.) registered six saves in her first career appearance for the Lady Knights.
- Rodrigues led the Lady Knights with three shots followed junior
Sammy Valloud (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) with two.
- Despite the final outcome, the Fighting Scots held a 17-10 shot advantage. The Fighting Scots also finished with a 7-6 lead in shots on goal.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE- Since joining the PSAC in 2008, the Lady Knights remain undefeated in seven season openers.
- Last season, the Lady Knights and Fighting Scots battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw Oct. 16. The Lady Knights and Fighting Scots have settled for a time in three of their last seven contests.
- The match between the local rivals was the 20th in program history. The Lady Knights own an 11-6-3 all-time record against the Fighting Scots.
UP NEXTFollowing a quick ride down I-79, Gannon returns to home field at GU Field Saturday, Sept. 6. The Lady Knights will host Mansfield at 5:30 p.m.
