BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - A rally from a seven-goal second-half deficit by the Gannon women's lacrosse team came up just short before time ran out during a 16-12 loss Friday afternoon at No. 15 Bloomsburg.
Bloomsburg, ranked 15th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national rankings, opened the contest with three consecutive goals. The Huskies scored five of the first half's last six goals for an 11-4 halftime advantage.
Marisa Moley's goal with 19:30 remaining gave Bloomsburg a 13-6 lead. That's when the Gannon offensive got on track. The Lady Knights ripped off three consecutive goals to pull within 13-9.
Tessa Mitchell (Rush, N.Y./Rush Henrietta),
Kelsey Bright (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and
Kimberly Neagle (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) scored during the run.
Moments after Bloomsburg bumped its lead up to 15-9, Gannon answered again with three of the next four goals. Neagle scored on a free-position shot at the 7:24 mark. Bright and Neagle then found the back of the net during the final 99 seconds, before time ran out on a 16-12 setback.
Bloomsburg held advantages in shots (31-24), ground balls (16-14) and fewest turnovers (15-20). Gannon topped the charts in draw controls (19-12) and saves (7-5).
Neagle led the Gannon offensive unit with five goals. Mitchell, Bright and
Christie Valentine (Friendship, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) added two scores each.
Stevie Lombardoni (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) accounted for the final goal. Bright and Lombardoni were credited with one assist apiece.
Margaret Maslyn (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) started the match in goal, making six saves and allowing nine goals in 20 minutes and 16 seconds.
Carly Shaw (Somers, N.Y./Somers) saw 39 minutes and 44 seconds of relief action.
Gannon dropped to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with its second consecutive loss. Bloomsburg improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Lady Knights conclude a weekend road trip Saturday, March 29 at East Stroudsburg. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
