Gannon Men's Basketball Team's 12-Game Home Win Streak Snapped with Two-Point Loss to Le Moyne (Video/Photos)

THE RUNDOWN
  • Score: Le Moyne 47, at Gannon 45
  • Records: Gannon (2-3), Le Moyne (5-1)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - Hammermill Center
  • The Short Story: The Gannon men's basketball team went 6-of-29 from three-point range against Le Moyne's zone defense, was out-rebounded for the first time in eight games dating back to last season and saw its 12-game home win streak snapped as the Golden Knights dropped a 47-45 defensive slugfest during the opening night of the 31st Annual Gary Miller Classic.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon initially opened a 5-0 lead on a three-pointer from senior Girbran Smith (Nassau, Bahamas/Seton (Ill.) Academy) 20 seconds into the contest and a lay-up by sophomore Matthew Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) 2:09 later.
  • Le Moyne didn't record its first points until Stan Buczek scored on a lay-up 2:49 into the game. Connor Mahoney's triple 41 seconds later knotted the contest at five.
  • Trailing 11-10, Le Moyne produced a 9-2 run to assume its largest lead of the first half at 19-13. Nate Gause ignited the rally with a three-pointer and a free throw. Buczek converted an old-fashion three-point play, before Qwadere Lovell's jumper gave the Dolphins a six-point lead with 4:30 left in the first half.
  • Gannon responded with seven consecutive points to move back in front. Freshman Isaiah Eisendorf (Los Angeles, Calif./Springbrook, Md.) nailed a jumper, senior Raphell Thomas-Edwards (Leicester, England/The Gateway School) scored on a lay-up and senior Adam Blazek (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) dropped in a long-range bomb to give the home squad a 20-19 edge with 1:20 showing on the clock.
  • The lead was short-lived as Gause drained a three-pointer to push Le Moyne back in front during its next possession. Another jumper by Lovell as time expired gave the Dolphins a 24-21 lead at the break.
  • Le Moyne tied its biggest lead by scoring four of the first five points of the second half. A Gause jumper gave the Dolphins its six-point lead (28-22) back at the 17:49 mark.
  • Gannon tied the game again at 29 following a three-pointer from Blazek and lay-up by Thomas-Edwards with 15:40 to play.
  • The two teams battled to ties at 29, 31, 33 and 35 during the next three minutes. The contest saw its eighth deadlock at 39 with 7:41 remaining. Gannon and Le Moyne combined to make five field goals during the rest of the game.
  • As he did last Saturday at Mercyhurst, Smith came up with two big three-pointers late in the game. Trailing 43-39, he drilled a three-pointer from the left corner and followed with another triple from the right side to give Gannon a 45-43 lead with 47 seconds left.
  • However, Le Moyne countered with a Connor Mahoney three-pointer from the right wing with 31 ticks left to forge back ahead 46-45.
  • Gannon misfired on a three-pointer during its next possession, before Le Moyne increased its advantage to 47-45 with a free throw. The Dolphins missed the second free throw, leading to a Gannon half-court shot that was off the mark as time expired.

GAME NOTES
  • Friday's contest featured eight ties and seven lead changes. The second half included five ties and four lead changes.
  • Le Moyne out-rebounded Gannon 35-32. The Dolphins are the first team to out-rebound the Golden Knights since Slippery Rock produced a 19-rebound advantage during a 73-69 loss during the PSAC Quarterfinals at the Hammermill Center on March 4.
  • Thomas-Edwards recorded his second consecutive double-double and sixth career double-dip with 12 points and 10 rebounds. His career-high six steals left him four shy of a triple-double.
  • Smith and Blazek added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
  • Gannon shot 30.9 percent (17-55) from the field, 20.7 percent (6-29) from three-point range and 50 percent (5-10) from the free throw line.
  • The Golden Knights recorded their lowest three-point shooting percentage since hitting 14.3 percent (1-7) during a 59-56 victory against Slippery Rock at the Hammermill Center on February 5.
  • Gannon's 14 steals represented the program's most since recording 14 during a 65-46 victory against Daemen in the 2012 Gary Miller Classic Championship Game.
  • The Golden Knights out-scored the Dolphins 19-3 in points off turnovers.
  • Gause led Le Moyne with 14 points and nine rebounds despite hitting only 3-of-14 field goals. Mahoney was the only other visiting player in double digits with 13 points.
  • The Dolphins shot 41 percent (16-39) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-13) from behind the arc and 66.7 percent (10-15) from the charity stripe.
  • Friday's 92 combined points were 14 more than the lowest combined points in Gary Miller Classic history, produced during a 40-38 Gannon victory against Northern Kentucky in 2009.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon dropped a close decision to Le Moyne during the opening night of the Gary Miller Classic for the second consecutive season. The Golden Knights fell 65-62 during the 2013 semifinals.
  • The Peach Street kids suffered a loss during the first night of the Gary Miller Classic for the fourth time in the last six seasons. The program had won 12 of its previous 13 Gary Miller Classic openers.
  • Gannon saw its 12-game home win streak snapped with Friday's loss. The Golden Knights hadn't tasted defeat at the Hammermill Center since an 85-75 setback against Shepherd during the first night of last year's Porreco Cup on December 13, 2013.
  • Head coach John T. Reilly's club has held consecutive opponents under 50 points for the second time in two seasons. The Golden Knights accomplished the feat last year during victories against Cheyney (68-41) and Clarion (60-45) on January 8 and 11.
  • Gannon was held under 50 points in consecutive games for the first time since opening the 2009-10 season with a 73-43 loss to Urbana, a 59-45 setback against Lake Erie and a 40-38 win against Northern Kentucky.
  • The Golden Knights played consecutive games with neither team reaching the 50-point plateau for the first time since January 21-22, 1949. Gannon won at Clarion 47-42 on January 21, 1949 before losing at St. Vincent 48-45 on January 22, 1949.

UP NEXT
  • The 31st Annual Gary Miller Classic concludes Saturday, November 29 with predetermined pairings. Slippery Rock faces Le Moyne at 5:30 p.m. followed by Gannon against Alderson Broaddus at 7:30 p.m.
  • The Gannon-Alderson Broaddus contest can be heard live on Jet Radio 1400 and via the 90.5 WERG stream at www.wergfm.com.
  • Gannon defeated Alderson Broaddus 55-54 during last year's Gary Miller Classic consolation game. Jabs Newby's jumper with 1:45 to play followed by two defensive stops in the final 63 seconds provided the victory.
  • Saturday's contest will be the second during a seven-game homestand. The Golden Knights won't hit the road again until a December 20 contest at Cheyney, a span of 27 days.
