HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team was able to generate much offense during the first half. Only five shots were taken with California (Pa.) producing four of them.
  • The best scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 40th minute. A header by California's Kevin Helbig off a throw-in appeared to be headed inside the right post, but Gannon freshman goalkeeper Manuel Mangu (Maple Ridge, British Columbia/Garibaldi Secondary School) made a diving save.
  • The match was ultimately decided before fans could settle back into their seats for the second half. California (Pa.) opened the second half with possession and Djordje Babic immediately sent a pass over the Gannon defense from midfield. Nathan Delgado received the pass behind the Golden Knight defense and finished a one-on-one 11 seconds into the second half for a 1-0 lead.
  • Mangu turned away a couple great Cal scoring chances during the second half. The first came in the 61st minute on a point-blank redirect on the right side off a crossing pass.
  • The second happened in the 69th minute when Mangu made a tremendous save on another one-on-one opportunity.
  • Gannon's best chance to tie the contest came with 8:30 remaining in regulation. Cal keeper Shane Donovan punched an initial crossing pass out of harm's way, but was trapped out of the net when senior Robbie Bennett (Durban, South Africa/St. Benedict School) received the ball outside the box on the left side. He rifled a shot towards the empty net, but a Cal defender was able to head the ball out.
  • Donovan made one last save on a header with 48 seconds remaining to preserve the shutout.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon held a tight 8-7 edge in shots during a defensive affair. The Vulcans out-shot the Golden Knights 4-1 during the first half, before the Golden Knights turned the tables with a 7-3 edge during the final 45 minutes.
  • The contest featured only five corner kicks, seven saves and one goal.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon played its second 1-0 match of the season, finishing on the losing end both times.
  • The Golden Knights hold down sixth place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with one conference match remaining. The squad holds a one-point lead over three teams, but all three squads have one match in hand. The top six teams qualify for the PSAC Tournament.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon continues a three-match homestand Wednesday, October 29 against Davis & Elkins at Gannon University Field. The non-conference match is scheduled for 4 p.m. It reflected a change from the previous scheduled time of 6 p.m.
  • The regular season concludes Saturday, November 1 against rival Mercyhurst at Gannon University Field. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. Gannon's four seniors will be honored during pre-match festivities as part of Senior Day.
