GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon led from start to finish during a 25-13 victory in the first set. A kill from sophomore Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) followed by a California hitting error gave the Lady Knights the first two points. They never trailed again.
  • Six consecutive points midway through the opening stanza gave the Lady Knights a 15-6 lead. A pair of service aces from sophomore Lauren Beck (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) highlighted the run that was capped with a kill from junior Lynne Hibbard (West Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable).
  • Consecutive kills from senior Maggie Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio/Hoover), Beck and Kren later spurred a 4-0 rally that pushed the lead to 23-9. A Cal service error ended the set at 25-13.
  • The second set began with the two teams tied at one, two, three, four and five. Down 5-4, Gannon rolled off four straight points to assume a lead it would never relinquished. Desrosiers and Beck sandwiched a pair of Cal attack errors to produce the run.
  • Leading 11-7, the Lady Knights took control with five straight points. Hibbard ripped off three kills to go along with two more Cal errors for a 16-7 advantage.
  • Hibbard's fifth kill of the set capped a 25-19 victory in the second stanza.
  • The third set featured 12 ties. The two teams forged the 12th tie at 15. Beck answered with a kill followed by a Cal error that gave Gannon a 17-15 edge. The Lady Knights would never trail again.
  • Leading 20-19, Gannon scored five of the final six points to complete the sweep. Kren and Hibbard produced two kills each, before a kill from Desrosiers ended the contest.

GAME NOTES
  • Gannon hit .230 or better for the fifth consecutive match and 16th time in 22 contests.

  • Hibbard had a career-high 13 kills with no errors in 19 attempts, finishing with a season-high .684 hitting percentage. She had five kills in seven attacks for a .714 hitting percentage during the second set. Hibbard posted four kills in six attempts for a .667 hitting percentage during both the first and final sets.
  • Senior Taryn Graham (Huron, Ohio/Huron) recorded 28 digs, representing her third-highest single-match total this season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon remained perfect at home this season, sweeping all eight encounters at the Hammermill Center. The Lady Knights have won 12 consecutive home matches dating back to last season.
  • California's win streak came to an end at 13. The Vulcans tasted defeat for the first time since a 3-1 setback against Lock Haven during a September 20 PSAC Crossover at Millersville, Pennsylvania.
  • Saturday's victory evened the all-time series between Gannon and California (Pa.) at 16.
  • Gannon entered the weekend in a three-way tie with California (Pa.) and Seton Hill for second place in the PSAC Western Division. After sweeping both teams, the Lady Knights now hold sole possession of second place. The squad sits one game ahead of Seton Hill and Cal while remaining one game behind first-place Clarion.

QUOTABLES |  HEAD COACH MATT DARLING
  • "We're very happy to get a win against Cal, who is always tough and has been the hottest team in the PSAC over the past few weeks."
  • "We played a steady, smart match today.  I think the key for us was keeping our errors down and keeping rallies going with good defense, and of course Lynne Hibbard had another monster match to get us points when we needed them.  Taryn and Megan played great, too, and their work made things possible for the hitters."

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to action next weekend with a two-match road trip. The Lady Knights kick off the trip with a rivalry match Friday, October 24 at Edinboro. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
  • The weekend concludes Saturday, October 25 at Slippery Rock. The Lady Knights have won 11 consecutive matches against the Rock and will attempt to record their sixth consecutive season sweep.
