Gannon Women's Soccer Team Wins Second Straight with 4-0 Shutout at Pitt-Johnstown

  • The Short Story: Four different Lady Knights scored during the first half as the Gannon women's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 shutout Saturday afternoon at Pitt-Johnstown. The Lady Knights have out-scored the Mountain Cats 17-1 during three all-time meetings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon took control early with two goals during the opening 12 minutes. Junior Mani Brueckner (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 9:06 into the contest. She beat a defender one-on-one, before finishing in the box for her sixth goal of the season.
  • Less than three minutes later, junior Ally Sharpe (Holley, N.Y./Brockport) scored unassisted. She blasted home a shot from the top of the box for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 Gannon advantage.
  • The onslaught continued with two goals during the span of 81 seconds late in the first half. Junior Kaitlyn Kissell (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) netted her second goal of the season at the 36:12 mark, scoring unassisted on a long shot from outside the box for a 3-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Bethany Perri (Valencia, Pa./Mars Area) followed with her first score of the campaign 1:21 later, finishing in the box after a scramble. Kissell was credited with an assist.
  • Neither team mustered much offense during a scoreless second half, before Gannon secured a 4-0 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • Saturday's contest was played in cold and rainy conditions.
  • Gannon scored twice before Pitt-Johnstown managed a shot.
  • The Lady Knights out-shot the Mountain Cats 19-3, including a 13-1 edge in the first half. It marks the second time Gannon has held an opponent to three shots this season. Lock Haven managed only three shots during a 4-0 loss to Gannon on September 13.
  • Gannon's 16-shot edge represented the team's largest advantage since out-shooting Clarion 24-8 during a 2-1 victory on October 26, 2013.
  • Four different Lady Knights scored during a match for the second time this season. The scenario also played out during a 4-2 win against Mercyhurst on September 24, 2014.
  • Perri's score late in the first half was the first of her career at Gannon.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon moved to 3-0 all-time against Pitt-Johnstown.
  • The Lady Knights have out-scored the Mountain Cats 17-1 in the all-time series, including a 10-1 edge during the last two encounters since UPJ joined the PSAC prior to the 2012-13 academic year.
  • Gannon recorded its fourth shutout of the season. It's the most by the Lady Knights in a single season since posting 11 shutouts in 2012.

  • Gannon returns to action Wednesday, October 22 at Kutztown. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Golden Bears hold down fourth place in the PSAC with a 9-3 record and 27 points.
  • Kutztown has won all five encounters since Gannon joined the PSAC prior to the 2008-09 academic year, including a 2-1 victory during the 2011 PSAC Quarterfinals. The Golden Bears lead the all-time series 6-1.
