Gannon Women’s Volleyball Completes Perfect Weekend at PSAC East/West Crossover; Wendel Becomes Program’s All-Time Assists Leader

The Short Story: The Gannon women's volleyball team went a combined 4-0 at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East/West Crossover hosted by Slippery Rock at the Morrow Field House. After recording a pair of victories in cross-divisional action Friday, the Lady Knights captured victories over Millersville and Shippensburg Saturday. To open the day, the Lady Knights swept the Marauders by set scores of 25-9, 25-15 and 25-15. The Lady Knights earned a 3-1 win over the Raiders by set scores of 25-18, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-9 to conclude action. Senior Megan Wendel (Aurora, Ohio/Kenston) recorded 54 assists against the Raiders to become the program's all-time assist leader to establish a new mark of 3,771.
 
GAME ONE

THE BASICS
- In a team effort, 10 different Lady Knights collected at least one kill in the win over the Millersville Marauders.
- Recording her 11th double-double of the season, sophomore Hannah Kren (Waukesha, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) posted 12 kills along with 10 digs to pick up her eighth straight double-double. Senior Emily Carver (Stow, Ohio / Theodore Roosevelt) matched Kren's 12 kills to earn a share of the top spot, adding a block assist to her totals.
- Wendel inched closer to the program's all-time lead in assists with 36. She also added four kills, five digs and two block assists.
-  The only changes in the score came in the first set with two tied scores and two lead changes. For the rest of the time, the Lady Knights dominated the action from the opening serve.
- Attacking at a clip of .394, the Lady Knights fired away at the Marauders, who finished with a .095 hitting percentage.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gannon Lady Knights captured a 25-9 win in the opening set to take a 1-0 lead over the Marauders. The Lady Knights posted a .389 hitting percentage in the victory, their second highest attack-performance. Holding a 6-4 lead over the Marauders, the Lady Knights erupted with a 19-5 run to secure the win. Junior Morgan Walters (Girard, Ohio / Girard) registered three service aces including two late to seal the win.
- Taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, the Lady Knights defeated the Marauders by the score of 25-15 in the second set. Taking a 6-1 lead off three kills by Carver, the Lady Knights extended their advantage to 13-3 before a Marauder timeout. The Lady Knights used their 10-point cushion throughout the set to capture the win. The Lady Knights recorded a match-best .415 hitting percentage.
-  In a bit of déjà vu from the second set, the Lady Knights earned a 6-1 lead with Carver recording two kills this time around. Facing a five-point deficit, the Marauders pulled within one of the Lady Knights, 9-8. The Lady Knights answered back with a 6-1 run to take a 15-9 lead capped by a service ace by senior Taryn Graham (Huron, Ohio/Huron). Relying on another 6-1 run, the Lady Knights earned the 25-15 set-win and sweep of the Marauders.

THE BASICS
- One of the many highlights against Shippensburg was Wendel's 54-assist performance to become the program's all-time leader in the category. Wendel came one dig short of picking up a double-double, securing nine digs along with one block assist and two kills.
- Kren posted a season-best 20 kills and 17 digs to claim her 12th double-double of the season. She also added three service aces.
- Sophomore Lauren Beck (Chardon, Ohio / Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) continues to emerge in the middle, recording a career-high 15 kills to go with two block solos and three block assists.
- Sophomore Jordyn Thiery (Cincinnati, Ohio / McAuley) registered her second double-double of the season with 10 kills and 18 digs. Graham also claimed 18 digs on the day to share the team's best total with Thiery.
- The match included 11 tied scores and seven lead changes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- To open the match, the Lady Knights earned a 25-18 win over the Shippensburg Raiders. Holding a 6-4 lead, the Lady Knights went on a 9-2 run to push their lead to 15-6 with three kills by Kren and two by Beck. The Lady Knights managed to use their lead down the stretch to capture the opening win.
- Taking a 2-0 lead in the match, the Lady Knights secured a 25-15 in the second set. With the set tied at four all, the Lady Knights went on a 5-0 run including with two service aces by Kren to take a 9-4 lead. The Raiders pulled to within two at 11-9 before the Lady Knights strung together four unanswered points with two from Beck. Freshman Kelsey Ansec (Solon, Ohio / Solon) and Beck each recorded two kills as the Lady Knights closed out the 25-15 win on a 5-0 run.
- The Lady Knights erased a five-point deficit early in the third set to tie the score at 10-10. The Raiders pushed their lead to double digits at 23-13 before the Lady Knights went on a 10-1 run to pull within one. With the set-point in the balance, the Raiders held on for a 25-23 win following a quick timeout.  
- Holding a 2-1 match lead, the Lady Knights managed to seal the win with a 25-9 victory over the Raiders. With the set tied at 3-3, the Lady Knights erupted for a 13-0 run to take a 16-3 lead. Kren accounted for five of the points during the stretch. Halfway through the match, the competition became closer but the Lady Knights' lead was too much for the Raiders to overcome.
