EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Gannon volleyball team finished a perfect 4-0 weekend during the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East-West Crossover Tournament with wins against Shippensburg (25-16, 25-15, 26-24) and East Stroudsburg (25-15, 25-17, 25-16).
The Lady Knights opened the day with a sweep of Shippensburg. Gannon quickly took care of the first two sets by scores of 25-16 and 25-15 before falling behind in the third set. Gannon trailed 23-17 as the match looked to be headed to a fourth set. However, the Lady Knights stormed back to cap off the victory with a 26-24 third-set win.
Lauren Sazama (St. Louis, Mo. / Oakville) again led the Gannon offense with 16 kills and a .452 hitting percentage. The senior had an match-high 26 digs, three aces, one solo block and three block assists.
Morgan Reineke (New Knoxville, Ohio / New Knoxville) finished with 11 kills while
Kayla Knickerbocker (Richland, Mich. / Gull Lake) totaled seven.
Megan Wendel (Aurora, Ohio / Kenston) dished out 36 assists and added six digs.
Gannon completed the weekend with another dominating performance against East Stroudsburg. The Lady Knights kept the Warriors from scoring more than 17 points in any set during the win.
Reineke led the way for Gannon with 10 kills and a .308 hitting percentage. Sazama added nine kills while Knickerbocker totaled seven.
Maggie Desrosiers (Uniontown, Ohio / Hoover) added three aces, as did Sazama. Wendel dished out 30 assists and
Taryn Graham (Huron, Ohio / Huron) had 11 digs.
The Lady Knights hit .258 as a team compared to .010 for East Stroudsburg. Gannon totaled 33 kills, 11 total blocks and eight aces.
“We are very happy to be returning to Erie with four wins and a great start in conference play,” said head coach
Matt Darling. “ Shippensburg, like always, gave us all we could handle and it was nice to successfully complete a comeback in the third set.”
“So far this year we've depended on our offense for the majority of our points. However, today we were able to defend much better and force our opponent into some errors that we were able to take advantage of.”
Gannon moves to 12-2 this season with a 4-0 mark in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action with Western Division play on Friday, September 28 with a match against California (Pa.). The match will start at the Hammermill Center at 7 p.m.
