Gannon Swim Teams Conclude First Half with Split at Fredonia State

Freshman Ryan Carter was the only Gannon swimmer to win multiple gold medals Friday night at Fredonia State.


FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Gannon swim teams concluded a solid first half of the season Friday night with a dual-meet split at Fredonia State. The men's team posted a 120.5-110.5 victory while the women's squad fell 130-86.

Six different Golden Knights combined to win seven events during the men's competition. Ryan Carter (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) led the way as a double-winner. The true freshman took home the gold in the 200-yard IM (2:30.72) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:00.39). Both performances came with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying times.

Other individual winners included Mike Lawrence (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:01.34 / PSAC time), Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.30 / PSAC time), Nick Wolhaupter (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) in the 100-yard butterfly (53.38 / PSAC time), Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in the 100-yard backstroke (54.06 / PSAC time) and Alex Fisher (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.54).

Two more PSAC-qualifying times were recorded on the men's side as the Nathan Bean (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (49.56) and Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African College) placed third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.39).

The Gannon women's team captured three individual titles and one relay first-place finish. Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) and Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) won individual gold medals with PSAC-qualifying times. Joseph did it in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.79) while Vincent performed the feat in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.37).

Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell) captured the Lady Knights' first championship of the night in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11 minutes and 15.77 seconds.

The night ended with the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Emily Nottingham (Titusville, Pa./Titusville), Madeline Summers (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens), Michelle Fischl (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) and Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) touching the wall first in one minute and 40.73 seconds.

The Lady Knights also added three PSAC-qualifying times in non-title performances. Fischl swam a second-place time of 25.44 in the 50-yard freestyle. Kelsey Williams (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) had a third-place showing of 5:23.11 in the 500-yard freestyle. Amanda Knapp (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) wrapped up the best efforts with a second-place finish of 1:11.31 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Gannon men's swim team improved to 6-4 with Friday's victory while the women's squad evened its dual record at 6-6. Fredonia State moved to 3-2 on the women's side and remained winless at 0-5 in men's action.

Head coach Nathan Walters' swim teams will have 36 days off until returning to action Saturday, January 12 against NCAA Division I Canisius at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The home finale is scheduled for 11 a.m.
