Gannon Swim Teams Record Nine Top-Three Finishes Against Division I Opponents at Cleveland State Tri-Meet

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Gannon swim teams recorded five runner-up finishes and produced 17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times while winning one of four match-ups against NCAA Division I opponents Saturday afternoon at the Cleveland State Tri-Meet.

The men's team split two decisions, defeating Niagara 116-106 and falling to Cleveland State 186-48. The women's squad dropped verdicts to Niagara (128-109) and Cleveland State (189-48).


Mike Lawrence (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs) led the men's team with three PSAC-qualifying times. The freshman posted his first mark with a third-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:58.84). He followed with qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle (6th, 1:52.35) and the 500-yard freestyle (4th, 4:52.95).

Terrance Coughran (Atwater, Calif./Atwater) met conference standards in two events, joining Lawrence in the 200-yard freestyle. Coughran finished fourth with a time of one minute and 50.44 seconds. The junior then hit the wall in time during the 100-yard freestyle, placing sixth in 49.48 seconds.

Nick Wolhaupter (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) was the final Golden Knight to record a pair of PSAC-qualifying times. The sophomore finished fourth in both the 50-yard freestyle (22.22) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.64).

Other Gannon male swimmers to produce conference-qualifying times included Ryan Carter (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) in the 200-yard freestyle (3rd, 1:47.37), Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in the 200-yard butterfly (4th, 2:00.83) and Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in the 200-yard backstroke (3rd, 1:56.74).

Gannon picked up its lone runner-up finish on the men's side in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Chrzanowski, Chase, Carter and Wolhaupter touched the wall second in a time of three minutes and 13.55 seconds.

The women's competition was highlighted by a pair of silver medals in the relay events. The first came during the 400-yard medley relay where Kelsey Williams (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), Amanda Knapp (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) produced a team time of four minutes and 7.43 seconds.

Gannon concluded the women's action with another runner-up position in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Lydic, Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Michelle Fischl (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) and Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) combined to swim a 3:39.53 time.

In addition to her role on the 400-yard freestyle relay, Joseph was the only Lady Knight to record two PSAC-qualifying times individually. The sophomore accomplished the feat in the 200-yard freestyle (5th, 1:58.10) and the 100-yard freestyle (4th, 54.00).

Gannon rounded out the women's conference-qualifying times with Lazenby in the 200-yard freestyle (6th, 2:02.31), Lydic in the 50-yard freestyle (2nd, 24.58), Williams in the 200-yard backstroke (2nd, 2:11.62), Fischl in the 200-yard backstroke (4th, 2:16.05) and Janelle McDaniels (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) in the 200-yard breaststroke (3rd, 2:32.45).

The Gannon men's team moved to 1-2 with Saturday's split. Cleveland State improved to 5-1 while Niagara fell to 0-2. Gannon is now 1-2 on the women's side. Cleveland State saw its women's record raise to 3-2 while Niagara went to 0-2.

Both Gannon swim teams return to action Friday, November 2 against Bloomsburg at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The dual meet is scheduled for 5 p.m.
