CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Gannon women's basketball team dropped its second straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division contest, falling to the Vulcans of California (Pa.) by a 72-63 final.
Gannon was out-rebounded by a 44-28 margin and allowed the Vulcans to grab 18 offensive rebounds. It marks the second straight game Gannon has allowed an opponent to grab 18 offensive rebounds after Edinboro did it on Wednesday.
The first half featured three lead changes with the score tying four times as neither team was able to take control of a significant lead. A three pointer from Megan Kermond gave California (Pa.) a 10-6 lead at the 12:55 mark. A free throw three minutes later would give the Vulcans' their largest lead of the half.
Gannon was able to erase the California (Pa.) lead with a 10-3 spurt that lasted four minutes.
Candice Hendricks (Randallstown, Md. / McDonogh) added two points before
Mollie Sebald (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Holy Name) tied the game at 20 with 5:58 to play.
Doriyon Glass' (Boardman, Ohio / Boardman) score gave Gannon a lead for the first time since just over four minutes into the game.
Kelley Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn. / E.O. Smith) added two free throws to extend the lead to four.
The Vulcans managed to tie the game at 31 with 55 seconds remaining, but a lay-up from
Jen Papich (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) as time expired gave the Lady Knights a two-point lead heading into the break.
In the second half, Gannon extended the lead to five thanks to a three-pointer from
Kelsey McCoy (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) after a California (Pa.) free throw, Gannon took its largest lead of the night with a lay-up from Glass.
However, the lead for Gannon wouldn't last as California (Pa.) out-scored the Lady Knights 21-9 over the final eight minutes of the game. The streak started when the Vulcans scored two straight fast-break baskets, tying the score at 55 with 6:38 to play.
California (Pa.) took the lead just over a minute later and then extended it to five when Amy Johns converted a three-point play at the 2:42 mark.

Gannon was led offensively by Glass for the second straight game. The redshirt freshman finished with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Papich and Blake each added 10 points. Papich also had three rebounds, five steals, four assists and two blocks.
Sebald and Mccoy added eight and seven points respectively off the bench.
Cal was lead by Johns' 18 points and seven rebounds. During the game, Johns became the 24
th player in school history to record 1,000 points.
The loss drops the Lady Knights to 11-3 overall with an 8-2 record in conference. California (Pa.) now holds a 9-5 overall record with a 6-4 record in PSAC contests. The Lady Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, January 18 when they travel to local rival Mercyhurst.
