ERIE, Pa. - The Edinboro defense hasn't been kind to Gannon the last two seasons. The 19th-ranked Fighting Scots limited the Golden Knights to 182 yards of total offense en route to a 27-0 shutout Saturday afternoon before 2,100 sun-drenched fans at Gannon University Field. It was Edinboro's second consecutive blanking of the Golden Knights, who fell 13-0 last season at Sox Harrison Stadium.

The Gannon defense was unable to stay off the field all day as Edinboro held the ball for 37 minutes and 55 seconds compared to the Golden Knights' 22 minutes and five seconds.

Head coach Scott Browning's squad never scored more than 10 points in a quarter, but methodically added to its lead throughout the day. Edinboro started the game with an impressive 12-play, 69-yard scoring drive. With Golden Knights unable to maintain their rushing lanes, quarterback Cody Harris scrambled for 34 yards during the drive. He then connected with David Bostic for an eight-yard touchdown pass with 7:42 left in the quarter. All but 18 yards on the drive that lasted seven minutes and 18 seconds came via the run.

Edinboro, ranked 19th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) national rankings, took advantage of a Gannon miscue to get its second score. On the second play of the second quarter, Daniel Tapscott's (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) toss to a receiver on the outside was actually thrown backwards. The ball went through the receivers hands and was ruled a fumble. James Jackson had the ball bounce directly into his chest, before he returned it seven yards. Three plays later, Harris and Marcus Johnson hooked up on an 18-yard touchdown pass 1:07 into the second quarter.

The defensive stand of the day came at the end of the first half. The Gannon offense produced a drive that marched 78 yards and took 6:18 off the clock. The Golden Knights had third-and-goal from the Edinboro one-yard line, but was stuffed on back-to-back rushing plays. A touchdown would have cut the lead to 4-7 and given Gannon the momentum going into the half, but the goal line stand with 27 seconds left preserved the two-touchdown difference and gave the Fighting Scots some energy heading into the intermission.

The visitors started grinding out the clock in the second half, holding the ball for 11 minutes in the third quarter. Edinboro extended its lead to 24-0 after three quarters on Alex Romanias' 31-yard field goal at the 9:09 mark and Jackson's 49-yard interception return with 6:48 left in the frame.

Romanias' 21-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter capped the scoring. Gannon closed in on midfield twice in the fourth quarter, but was stopped by the Edinboro defense both times. The Golden Knights reached their 45-yard line midway through the quarter, but turned the ball over with an incomplete pass on fourth-and-four. The squad then started its last drive on the 45-yard line, but Zach Kemmer's first career interception at the Boro's 35-yard line sealed the deal.

Edinboro held advantages in total yards (340-182), rushing yards (193-72), passing yards (147-110), first downs (18-14) and time of possession (37:55-22:05). The Fighting Scots were 7-of-15 on third-down conversions compared to Gannon's 2-of-10 effort.

Jansen Jones (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) led the Gannon ground attack with 52 yards on 10 carries. Alex Papson (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) added 31 yards on 13 attempts.

Tapscott finished 11-of-25 for 85 yards and two interceptions. Jerry Smith (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) caught three of those passes for 21 yards..

Defensively, Khayree Connors-McChristian (Sicklerville, N.J./Winslow Township) led all tacklers with 10 stops. Kevin Borton (Orange, Calif./El Modena) was next with nine tackles. Randy Colling (Arcade, N.Y./Pioneer) and Ta'Von Bailey (Lanham, Md./DeMatha Catholic) secured eight stops each.

Colling had two more sacks against the Fighting Scots, giving him 22 during his career. The senior defensive lineman is now 1.5 sacks behind David Leven (1992-95) for second place on Gannon's all-time list and 6.5 sacks shy of Mitchell Hanlon's (2001-04) school record.

Gannon dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with Saturday's loss. Edinboro remained undefeated at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Golden Knights hit the road for the first time in nearly a month next Saturday (October 1), but it will only be a cross-town trip to rival Mercyhurst. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. Head coach Jim Kiernan's squad will try to hold on to the Niagara Cup after posting a 14-10 come-from-behind victory against the Lakers last season at Gannon University Field.
