Gannon Football Team Hosts 14th-Ranked Slippery Rock Saturday Afternoon on Senior Day; Smith and Rzyczycki Preview Interviews Available

The Gannon defense will attempt to slow down the country's 14th-ranked team in Slippery Rock during Saturday's home finale.

The Gannon football team concludes the home portion of its 2011 campaign Saturday, November 5 against nationally-ranked Slippery Rock at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 12 noon.

Gates and ticket windows will open at 11 a.m. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for non-Gannon students and senior citizens. All Gannon students are admitted free of charge by showing their school ID at the gate.

Saturday will also be Senior Day as 17 Golden Knights will be honored during pregame ceremonies. The 2011 senior group includes A.J. Belch (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown), Cory Borden (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg), Kevin Borton (Orange, Calif./El Modena), Miles Brooks (Bowie, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), Lawrence Coleman (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding), Randy Colling (Arcade, N.Y./Pioneer), Chris Cook (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw), Danny Giegerich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), Chris Jahnke (Island Lake, Ill./Wauconda), Bryan Kelly (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Jason Ladouceur (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park), Mike Misoff (Bradenton, Fla./Cardinal Mooney), Michael Schnell (Lackawanna, N.Y./Lackawanna), Mike Schweisthal (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Edward), Jerry Smith (Westland, Mich./John Glenn), Wesley Smith (Albany, N.Y./The Albany Academy) and Evan Twombly (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville).

Gannon brings a 3-6 overall record and 2-4 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division mark into Saturday's contest. The Golden Knights have dropped consecutive road contests at Indiana (Pa.) (35-7) and Clarion (28-21) since a 37-13 victory against Lock Haven in the last home game. The Golden Knights set a school record with 390 passing yards in last week's match-up at Clarion. Seniors Lawrence Coleman (7-194) and Jerry Smith (6-127) both recorded career-highs in receptions and receiving yards. They became the first Gannon duo to produce 100 receiving yards in the same game since 2005. Coleman, who needs one receiving touchdown to tie Gannon's single-season record (Pat Cain - 7 - 2003), had the third-highest single-game receiving yards total in school history last week.

Slippery Rock enters Saturday's contest with an 8-1 overall record and a perfect 6-0 PSAC Western Division mark. The squad has already clinched at least a share of the divisional title with California (Pa.) sitting one game back. However, Slippery Rock is guaranteed a spot in the PSAC Championship for the first time since 1974 because it wins the tiebreaker against Cal based on a 17-3 victory in the head-to-head match-up on October 15. The Rock is ranked 14th in the latest National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 Poll and sixth in the latest NCAA Division II Super Region One rankings. Six teams from the region are invited to play in the NCAA Division II Tournament at the end of the regular season.

Gannon has won the last two games against Slippery Rock and leads the all-time series 4-2. The last five games have been decided by a score or less and four of the last five have been decided by four points or less. Gannon earned a 51-48 home victory in 2009 and a 24-20 road win last season.
