The Gannon football team concludes the 2011 regular season Saturday, November 12 at C.W. Post. Game time is scheduled for 12 noon.
Gannon was originally scheduled to play at Kutztown in the season finale, but its travel destination was changed after the Golden Bears advanced to this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship game. Gannon and C.W. Post last met 18 years ago with the Pioneers posting a 55-14 home victory. C.W. Post leads the all-time series 2-0, including a 21-14 victory in Erie during the 1992 campaign. Both contests were played during Gannon's non-scholarship era. The Golden Knights moved to scholarship football in the 2000s.
Head coach Jim Kiernan's squad brings a 4-6 overall record into Saturday's contest. The Golden Knights completed PSAC Western Division play last Saturday with a 3-4 record after a come-from-behind 33-27 victory against then-No. 14 Slippery Rock. For Gannon, it represented the second time in three years the program took down a nationally-ranked team in the closing weeks of the regular season. The Golden Knights last did it November 7, 2009 with a 10-7 overtime victory at 19th-ranked Bloomsburg.
Gannon trailed 20-7 at halftime, before out-scoring the Rock 26-7 in the final two quarters. It represented the largest second-half comeback since overcoming a 19-0 halftime deficit en route to a 22-19 victory at Shippensburg on September 11, 2010. In the process,
Lawrence Coleman (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) caught three touchdowns to give him nine this season, breaking the school's single-season record.
Jansen Jones (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game and
Daniel Tapscott (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha Catholic) tossed a career-high four touchdowns.
C.W. Post comes into the season finale red hot, winning six of its last seven games. The Pioneers finished Eastern Division play tied for first place with a 6-1 record, but they lost the tiebreaker to Kutztown based on head-to-head competition. The defensive unit has been the key as C.W. Post ranks fifth among all NCAA Division II programs in sacks per game (3.6) and ninth in tackles for a loss per game (9.1). The squad is 0-2 against the PSAC West this season, falling on the road to California (Pa.) (41-13) and Mercyhurst (34-7).
