Gannon Football Team Looks to Even Record Saturday Afternoon at 15th-Ranked California (Pa.)

The Gannon defensive unit will attempt to slow down a Cal offense that averages 32 points and 457.2 yards of total offense per game.
The Gannon football team concludes a brief two-game road swing Saturday, October 8 at 15th-ranked California (Pa.). Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Golden Knights will be looking to even its overall record at 3-3 with a victory.

Gannon (2-3, 1-1)  is already even in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with a 1-1 mark, following a come-from-behind 30-27 victory at rival Mercyhurst last Saturday. The Golden Knights overcame a 20-10 second-half deficit behind Lawrence Coleman's (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) three touchdowns in the final two quarters. The senior wide-out finished with career-highs in catches (7) and receiving yards (127). All but one catch for 30 yards came during the second half. As a result, the program held onto the Niagara Cup for the second consecutive season.

The Gannon defensive line continues to be among the region's best. Gannon ranks second among PSAC teams in sacks (20), behind only C.W. Post's 21 sacks. Randy Colling (Arcade, N.Y./Pioneer) leads the conference in sacks per game (1.30) and tackles for a loss per game (2.20). The senior defensive lineman is listed sixth nationally in sacks and 10th in tackles for a loss. He has 22.5 career sacks, needing one to tie David Leven (1992-95) for second place all-time at Gannon.

California (Pa.) is ranked 15th in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) national rankings. The Vulcans are 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC Western Division after last week's 54-13 victory at Lock Haven. The program has won four consecutive games after a season-opening home loss to 17th-ranked St. Cloud State (Minn.) by a score of 26-3. Cal has since defeated C.W. Post (41-13), East Stroudsburg (22-19), Clarion (40-13) and Lock Haven.
