Gannon Softball Team Completes Busy Week with Two Losses at California (Pa.)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The California (Pa.) pitching staff limited Gannon to five hits in two games Friday afternoon as the Vulcans swept a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division doubleheader. The Vulcans earned the sweep by scores of 8-3 and 8-0.

In the opener, California (Pa.) jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Gannon finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the deficit in half with three runs. Tiffany Joyce (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) scored the first run after she singled and scored on the same play due to a pair of errors. Kristin Schalk (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) drove in the second run while a third run crossed the plate on the same play due to another error.

California (Pa.) added two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame, before Lauren Shaheen set down the Lady Knights in order during the top of the seventh.

Schalk, Joyce and Sam Scott (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) recorded Gannon's only hits in the first game. Erica Bartholow (Connellsville, Pa./Connellsville Area) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits in six innings. The freshman struck out one and walked four.

In the nightcap, Maria Greco tossed a two-hit shutout in an 8-0 California (Pa.) victory that was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule. The Vulcans scored once in the third, twice in the fifth and five times in the sixth.

Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) and Ashley Petrone (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) had Gannon's two hits. Kelsey Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) dropped to 3-7 after surrendering eight runs on 16 hits in five innings. She struck out four and walked three.

Gannon dropped to 12-15 overall and 0-8 in the PSAC West with its eighth consecutive loss. California (Pa.) improved to 16-9 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Thursday, April 8 against Mercyhurst at Gannon University Field. The PSAC West twinbill begins at 2:30 p.m.
