CALIFORNIA, Pa. - Josh Portis set career-highs in passing yards (262) and touchdowns (5) as the California (Pa.) football team cruised by Gannon 52-10 Saturday afternoon in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opener for both squads.
The PSAC Western Division preseason favorites wasted little time to get its offense rolling. Portis connected with A.J. Jackson three times in the first quarter, including a 40-yard scoring strike 3:09 into the contest.
Gannon produced its only touchdown on
Jon Richardson's (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) two-yard run 3:18 into the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 21-7.
Tyler Batts' (Homestead, Pa./Penn-Trafford) 40-yard punt return set Gannon up at the Cal 26-yard line. The Golden Knights then punched the ball into the endzone with six consecutive running plays.
California scored again on Portis' fourth touchdown pass of the half with 9:18 showing on the second-quarter clock, before
Jeremy Ditzler's (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) 34-yard field goal closed out the first-half scoring with 52 seconds remaining.
The second half belonged to the Vulcans, who out-scored Gannon 24-0 and out-gained the Golden Knights 259-38 in the final 30 minutes. Josh Gumbert's 23-yard touchdown reception from back-up quarterback Ryan Morris capped the scoring with 10:02 left in regulation.
California held large advantages in first downs (26-10), rushing yards (232-34), passing yards (319-76), total yards (551-110), and time of possession (34:29-25:31).
Richardson was held under 100 rushing yards for the first time this season, producing 29 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.
Zach Boedicker (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) was 10-of-14 for 66 yards through the air.
Portis was Cal's offensive ignition, going 17-of-26 for 262 yards and five touchdowns. Jackson hauled in eight of those aerials for 119 yards and three touchdowns. Cody Wilson led eight rushers with 66 yards on 12 attempts.
Khayree Connors-McChristian (Sicklerville, N.J./Winslow Township) led the Gannon defensive unit with 10 tackles.
Matthew Neal-Mink (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) chipped in eight stops.
Randy Colling (Arcade, N.Y./Pioneer) and
Danny Giegerich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) added six tackles each.
The Cal defense recorded 13 tackles for a loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles, and three pass break-ups. Dontey Brown headlined the defense with six tackles.
Gannon dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC Western Division. Cal improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Golden Knights return to action Saturday, September 26 against Edinboro at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 12 noon.
