ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon football team did not allow a point during three of the four quarters and held off a pesky Cheyney squad 30-9 Saturday evening at Gannon University Field. The contest was the final one of a season-opening three-game homestand and marked the final night game of the season.
Gannon needed only 4:51 to score the contest's first points.
Jeremy Ditzler (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) ended a short eight-play, 29-yard drive with a 45-yard field goal. The boot tied his career-long, which he set last year against Indiana (Pa.). The junior then drilled a 43-yarder with 7:35 left in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead.
Head coach Jim Kiernan's squad extended the lead to 13-0 when
Tyler Batts (Homestead, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored on a one-yard plunge. The junior tailback accounted for 47 of the drive's 87 yards.
Cheyney scored it's only touchdown of the night on the next possession. The Wolves produced their best drive of the night, going 72 yards on nine plays. Ron Hunter's four-yard run capped the scoring drive, but a blocked extra point left the score at 13-6.
Jon Richardson (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) found the endzone from 24 yards out with 4:42 showing on the second quarter clock, before Cheyney's Tyler Wilkinson converted a 19-yard field goal at the first-half horn. The two teams combined to score 23 points in the second quarter as Gannon went to the intermission with a 20-9 advantage.
Gannon netted the only 10 points of the second half. Richardson recorded his second touchdown of the night in the third quarter. Ditzler then completed the scoring with a 33-yard field goal in the final period. He tied a school record with three field goals in a game. The feat has been accomplished six times, including twice by Ditzler. He also moved into second place all-time at Gannon with 20 career field goals.
Gannon had two 100-yard rushers in the same game for the first time since 2007. Richardson posted his third consecutive 100-yard game with 109 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. His second touchdown moved him into third place all-time at Gannon with 168 career points. Batts rushed for a career-high 100 yards and one touchdown on 13 attempts. Overall, the Golden Knights posted a lopsided 263-120 edge in rushing yards.
Defensively,
Matthew Neal-Mink (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) led the onslaught with 10 tackles, one sack, two tackles for a loss, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
Anthony Weaver (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and
Johnny Jones (Cambridge, Ohio/Cambridge) added seven tackles each. Weaver, who has played as a defensive back and tailback during his collegiate career, saw time on defense for the first time since the 2007 campaign.
Gannon improved to 2-1 for the second consecutive season with Saturday's victory. Cheyney dropped to 0-3 after its 19th consecutive defeat dating back to the 2007 season. The Golden Knights hit the road for the first time Saturday, September 19 at Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division preseason favorite California (Pa.). The PSAC West opener is scheduled for 12 noon. It can be seen live on Fox Sports Pittsburgh and heard live on Jet Radio 1400.
