Gannon Football Impressive in 40-18 Victory at Cheyney

Golden Knights Score Most Points on the Road Since 2004

Vinnie DeLuca passed for Gannon's first TD on a reverse handoff.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon football team moved to 2-1 overall for the first time since the 2003 season with a 40-18 victory at Cheyney Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) cross-over game.

It was Gannon's first victory against a PSAC school since a 20-18 win at Slippery Rock on September 13, 2003. The offensive production was also one to remember. The 40 points mark Gannon's highest single-game scoring output since a 50-45 victory against Findlay on October 22, 2005 and the highest single-game output on the road since a 45-40 win at Northern Michigan on September 25, 2004.

After a scoreless first quarter, the two teams rotated scoring drives in the second quarter. Gannon used a little trickery to score its first touchdown. Vinnie DeLuca (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) lined up as a wide receiver, took a reverse handoff from Bob Bartley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and threw the ball back to Bartley in the corner of the end zone to start the scoring 1:43 into the second frame.

Gannon's third scoring drive was capped by Jerry Smith's (Westland, Mich./John Glenn) 28-yard touchdown pass from Zach Boedicker (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) with 3:39 left in the half. It was his first career touchdown reception and sent the Golden Knights to halftime with a 21-12 edge.

Boedicker figured in on two more third-quarter scores. The sophomore quarterback connected with Levar Goff (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) for a 55-yard touchdown pass 1:15 into the second half and later found the endzone on a 41-yard run with 1:07 remaining in the third quarter.

Jeremy Ditzler (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) added two field goals (32 yards and 43 yards) in the fourth quarter to account for the final 40-18 score.

Gannon, playing without starting tailback Jon Richardson, had four players rush for at least 37 yards. Boedicker led the way with 63 yards and one touchdown on seven carries. He also went 5-of-9 for 109 yards and two touchdowns through the air.

Erie natives Anthony Weaver (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Ben Griffith (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added 57 and 51 rushing yards, respectively. Bartley split time with Boedicker at quarterback, finishing 9-of-15 for 99 yards.

Smith led all receivers with six catches for 44 yards. Goff hauled in two passes for 89 yards and one touchdown.

Matt Ward (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Dave Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) headlined the defensive unit with eight tackles each. Chris Cook (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) and Matthew Neal-Mink (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) added seven tackles apiece.

Gannon improved to 2-1 with Saturday's victory. Cheyney remained winless at 0-3. The Golden Knights finally conclude their season-opening four-game road swing Saturday, September 20 with the PSAC West opener at Slippery Rock. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
