Gannon Football Concludes Season With Loss to No. 14 Bloomsburg

Golden Knights Hold Huskies 219 Yards Below Rushing Average

Carmen Ciampi (#24) and Tom Johnson (#84) were two of 10 seniors honored prior to Saturday's final home game.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon football team held the nation's second-best rushing offense 219 yards below its average, but Bloomsburg quarterback Dan Latorre threw for three touchdowns to lead the No. 14 Huskies to a 38-10 victory Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both squads at Gannon University Field.

Bloomsburg, ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division II Super Regional One poll, jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead in unusual fashion. The Huskies entered the contest ranked second in the country with 293.70 rushing yards per game. The visitors managed only 18 rushing yards on seven carries in the first quarter and 42 yards on 10 carries in the second frame.

However, it was Latorre who provided the necessary relief. The junior went 10-of-13 for 156 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. In addition, his 15-yard run with 4:48 remaining in the half sent the Huskies to halftime with a 28-0 lead.

Gannon put its first points on the board on Jeremy Ditzler's (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) 29-yard field goal with 1:20 showing on the third-quarter clock. The sophomore completed the season with a school-record 15 field goals. He is fourth all-time with 17 field goals, 10 shy of the school's career record. His 68 points equaled the third-highest single-season scoring total in school history.

Zach Boedicker's (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) six-yard touchdown run with 4:33 remaining in regulation capped the scoring.

Gannon finished with statistical advantages in rushing yards (173-75) and time of possession (35:43-24:17). Bloomsburg produced more first downs (16-15), passing yards (208-72), and total yards (283-245).

Anthony Weaver (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led Gannon's ground attack with 76 yards on 21 carries. Both marks were career-highs. Boedicker added 63 yards and one touchdown on 10 carries while going 9-of-13 for 68 yards through the air. Corey Bradley (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) led the Gannon receivers with four catches for 21 yards.

It was no surprise that three of Gannon's top four tacklers on Senior Day were seniors. Matt Ward (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) and Chris Murphy (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) led the way with nine tackles each. Fellow senior David Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) added five stops. Sophomore Keith Yager (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) was also in the mix with eight tackles.

Gannon concluded its 2008 season with a 4-7 record, a three-win improvement from last season and the most victories in a season since 2004. Bloomsburg improved to 10-1 and will now await word on a possible NCAA Division II Tournament bid.
