LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Gannon football held Lock Haven to 88 yards of total offense and secured its fourth victory of the season via a 26-0 score Saturday afternoon in a game played mostly in the rain. It was Gannon's first shutout since a 21-0 victory at Thiel on October 28, 1995.
Gannon led 6-0 at halftime on a pair of
Jeremy Ditzler (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) field goals, extending his school-record season total to 13. The sophomore converted a 25-yard attempt in the first quarter and a 28-yard kick in the second frame.
Jon Richardson (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) and the defense took it from there. Richardson scored twice in the second half, finding pay dirt from two yards out in the third quarter and 14 yards out in the fourth.
Fittingly, the Gannon defense sealed the deal with Aaron Roberson's (Maple Heights, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) 39-yard interception return for a score with 11:56 remaining in the game.
Gannon dominated the game from a statistical standpoint. The Golden Knights held advantages in first downs (15-7), total yards (303-88), rushing yards (234-53), passing yards (69-35), and time of possession (35:24-24:36).
Richardson recorded his fourth 100-yard game of the season and seven of his career with 157 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Only Sterling Pierce (15) and Darmel Whitfield (14) recorded more 100-yard games in their careers.
Bob Bartley (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and
Zach Boedicker (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia) combined to post a 7-of-10 chart for 69 yards through the air. Bartley was 5-of-5 for 48 yards. The Golden Knights showed a limited passing attack in the rain, while Richardson and
Brig Van Etten (Novelty, Ohio/West Geauga) hauled in two passes each.
Matt Ward (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) led the defensive unit again with seven tackles, one sack, and two tackles for a loss.
Keith Yager (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and
Parris Williams (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) had five tackles each. Yager also produced his first two career interceptions.
Gannon improved to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with Saturday's victory. It marks the program's most victories in a season since the 2004 squad went 4-7 during its first season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Lock Haven remained winless at 0-9 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
Gannon returns to action Saturday, November 1 against 21st-ranked Indiana (Pa.) at Gannon University Field. Game time for the Homecoming game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
