Smith begins his fourth season on the Gannon coaching staff, serving as the program’s defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator.
The Twinsburg, Ohio, native originally served as Gannon’s wide receivers coach for three seasons, before switching his focus to the defensive backs in 2012. His efforts as Gannon’s recruiting coordinator has been one of the main reasons the program has transformed from a 1-10 record the year prior to his arrival into back-to-back winning seasons in 2009 and 2010.
Smith came to Gannon after spending the 2008 season in charge of the Offensive Quality Control at NCAA Division I Indiana University. His responsibilities at Indiana included offensive statistics, quality control, self scouting and opponent film breakdown. He also assisted the wide receiver and special team coaches.
Prior to his stay at Indiana, Smith served as the running backs coach at the University of Findlay in 2007. As an Oiler, he monitored the student-athletes’ academic performances and helped recruit high school and junior college student-athletes.
Smith previously served in the same capacity at Savannah State University in 2006. A graduate of Miami (Ohio) University, Smith also spent one season as an assistant coach at Central State (Ohio) University in 2005.
As a player at Miami, Smith was the Mid-American Conference scoring leader from his running back position during the 2003 campaign. A member of two MAC Championship teams, Smith rushed for over 1,300 career yards and scored 28 touchdowns for the Red Hawks. Miami defeated Louisville in the 2003 GMAC Bowl and fell to Iowa State in the 2004 Independence Bowl during his playing days.
