Paul Matthews is entering his first year as an assistant coach at Gannon in 2018-19. It will be his eighth year of coaching at the Division II level.
Matthews comes to Gannon after serving as the associate head coach at PSACÂ member Seton Hill, where his responsibilities included recruiting, skill development, practice planning, scouting opponents, weight training and academic monitoring.
During his time with the Griffins, he recruited or coached the school's all-time leading scorer, four 1,000-point scorers, and two PSAC West Defensive Players of the Year. As the team's academic coordinator, Seton Hill recorded the top GPA in the PSAC in the 2014-15 and 2016-17 seasons.
Matthews has also served as a camp counselor at Hoop Group Elite Camps, and travels internationally to China to conduct camps and coaching clinics for the Shanghai Basketball Association.
His grandfather, Bernie Matthews, was the head coach at St. Vincent for 33 years, and a member of the Pennsylvania Basketball Hall of Fame and the Pittsburgh Basketball Club Hall of Fame.
The Greensburg, Pennsylvania native earned his bachelor's degree in 2011 from Washington and Jefferson, where he was named all-Presidents' Athletic Conference. He earned his MBA from Seton Hill while serving as a graduate assistant coach.
