Joe Magorien

Magorien begins his second season as a member of the Gannon coaching staff in 2016 and will tutor the running backs. Magorien helped Brock Jones cap a collegiate career last season ranked fifth all-time at Gannon in rushing yards. Jones also broke the school record for career rushing average (6.2). He ranked among the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s (PSAC) top five in rushing touchdowns (15), points per game (9.3) and rushing yards per game (100.8).

Magorien came to the collegiate level after 14 years in the Millcreek Township (Pa.) School District. He had served as an assistant varsity football coach from 2005-14 and the strength and conditioning coach for grades 7-12 from 2001-14. Magorien coached special teams, running backs and linebackers at McDowell (Pa.) High School before coming to Gannon. He was a freshman football assistant for four seasons (2001-04) prior to his varsity appointment, including a two-year stint as the defensive coordinator. His coaching resume also includes being an assistant throwers coach for the McDowell Track and Field program from 2004-06. The girls’ team won back-to-back state championships in 2004 and 2005.

The Erie, Pa., native was a four-year letterwinner (1997-2000) at Mercyhurst (Pa.) University during his collegiate playing days. Magorien was named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Academic Team, the group of Dean’s List Scholar-Athlete award winners and Jim Camp’s All-Erie College Football Team as a senior. He served as a team captain for the 1995 McDowell football team, before being named to the all-conference first team as a linebacker. Magorien later played in the 1996 Save-an-Eye All-Star Game.

Magorien is currently a Learning Support Teacher for grades 9-12 at McDowell (Pa.) High School. He graduated from Mercyhurst University in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in education, before earning a master’s degree in educational leadership and obtaining a principal certification from Gannon in 2008.
