ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM PROTOCOLS

APPOINTMENTS
It will be important for student-athletes to make an appointment through the ARMS software if they need to be seen in the athletic training room on an individual basis. Please note this is only for individual appointments. Student-athletes don’t need appointments for care before practice which will be coordinated through your team. The facility will be open on an appointment-based system for student-athletes who are recovering from an injury. The number of visits per week will be dependent upon overall patient volume and facility space. No one will be allowed inside the athletic training room unless they are receiving treatment or an evaluation.

THE APPOINTMENT PROCESS
  • Make an appointment through the ARMS software.
    • Log into ARMs and access the Workflow Launchpad.
    • Select the “Athletic Training Appointment Request Form” under student forms.
    • Complete this workflow as thoroughly as possible.
    • Student-athletes should request appointments at least 24 hours in advance.
    • Upon review from the athletic training staff, the form will be approved or denied and added to the individual’s calendar in ARMS.
  • The student-athlete will get a phone call from an athletic trainer to confirm an appointment time and discuss the next steps. Requests can be made during this time if special accommodations need to be made for consultation.
  • Upon arrival in the ATC office, the student-athlete will log into the ATS system for documentation purposes. Student-athletes must also arrive with their LiveSafe app green check visible. You will be asked to show a screenshot of the green check or your confirmation email upon arrival. No one will be allowed access without this documentation.
  • A temperature check will be conducted to verify that there have been no changes since the LiveSafe app questions were completed.
  • Wash your hands before entering the ATC office.
  • Face coverings must be worn at all times in the athletic training room.
  • No personal belongings will be allowed in the athletic training room and cell phones must be kept on the student-athlete at all times.
  • Proper attire and shoe wear are mandatory.
  • Room capacity, social distancing, and cleaning protocols in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), local and state health department, and Gannon University guidelines will be followed at all times.
  • This process will be fluid and updates will be posted as needed.

MISSED APPOINTMENTS
If a student-athlete misses their scheduled appointment time, they will not be able to walk in for care. You will need to reschedule your appointment through the ARMS software. It is a necessity to be on time for your scheduled appointments due to the need for social distancing and a low density within the athletic training facilities.

PRE-PARTICIPATORY PHYSICAL EXAM/TESTING
There is no need to have a physical or testing prior to arriving on campus. All Gannon student-athletes must be seen and cleared by the Gannon medical staff. The process for physicals, COVID-19 testing, and other athletic training tasks will remain the same.  However, it is imperative that you completely all of your Athletic Training paperwork on ATS PRIOR to your arrival on-campus.

ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM ACCESS FOR ACUTE INJURIES
Immediate care will be provided for any injury that may require immediate evaluation and care such as laceration, concussion, or may need crutches, walking boot, sling or other immobilization device. For injuries that are not as severe, the student-athlete should contact a member of the athletic training staff via phone for guidance about their care on the day of injury.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE FEELING ILL
If you are feeling ill (cough, fever, sore throat, body aches, nausea, diarrhea, etc.), please don’t contact the athletic training office. All student-athletes who feel ill should contact the University Health Services Office at 814-871-7622. The office is located in the Harborview House Apartments at 210 West Sixth Street.

WATER AND ICE COOLERS
Student-athletes will not have access to coolers of ice and water coolers for practices. Public health guidelines stipulate that communal beverages and food are restricted. Student-athletes will be given individual water bottles. It is the student-athletes’ responsibility to bring that water bottle with them to every activity. Student-athletes will not be allowed to practice without their water bottle. Under no circumstance will water bottles be shared.  Athletic trainers will have access to cooler which will be utilized only to refill water bottles if necessary.

ADDITIONAL STEPS TAKEN TO ENSURE THE ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM IS SAFE
Sports medicine staff within the facility will be wearing personal protective equipment as recommended by medical and health professionals. There will be occupancy limits based upon public health and institutional guidelines to promote proper social distancing for student-athletes and sports medicine staff.  The athletic training room has been reconfigured to account for proper social distancing with marked entrances and exits. Equipment will be cleaned with approved disinfectant after each patient use. Student-athletes and athletic training staff are mandated to follow recommended guidelines for hand hygiene, face coverings and social distancing.

Athletic training staff members will:
  • Wear masks while treating patients
  • Social distance when possible
  • Adhere to room capacity regulations
  • Hand sanitize before and after each patient
  • Sanitize all places touched by patients after appointment
  • Wear gloves when hand sanitization may not be appropriate
  • Close whirlpool room until further notice and will used it for emergency treatment only
  • Encourage athletes to promote self-sufficiency and be active participants in their care
  • Treat your injuries by any means necessary to keep you safe.
